Rafael Nadal makes 12 New Year wishes

Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal makes 12 New Year wishes

Rafael Nadal ate his 12 grapes as he celebrated the New Year on the flight from Mallorca to Adu Dhabi.

It is a tradition in Spain and South American countries to eat 12 grapes at midnight, each of them representing a month in the New Year. One has to make a wish as you eat every grape.
"This year I will be spending it on a plane. Previously I had spent the night in India but since we are starting the season a bit later than usual, I will have to spend it on an airplane," Nadal said before his departure.

"Not to worry though, at least I'm bringing some grapes for the trip. I've got some here for me and my team and let's hope everything else goes fine."

A Grand Slam title on the hard surface could be one of those wishes and Nadal told a press conference here yesterday that he has been aiming towards that for some time.

"Well I try every year. Hopefully this time I can make it," he said.

"It was an amazing year. It was great but it was tough too." he said about 2008.

Nadal said he was not unduly worried about the pressures of being the No 1.

"In the end you have to start from zero. The season will be tough. I will try to start as best as I can. Whether I am No 2, three, five doesn't matter as long as I play good tennis. It is important for me to have a good feeling and get into a rhythm. Then we can think of winning matches," said Nadal.

Davydenko vs Roddick as it happended in Abu Dhabi

Nikolay Davydenko
Davydenko vs Roddick as it happended in Abu Dhabi

Nikolay Davydenko def Andy Roddick 6-4 6-4

Second set: Game 10

Davydenko serves out the match to get his 2009 campaign off to a winning start and set up a semi-final showdown with the world No1 Rafael Nadal.

Second set: Game nine

Roddick is unhappy with a few of the decisions not going his way and has words with the umpire. He channels that aggression into his next serve which the speed gun clocks at 192 kph. A fine backhand at the net sees him win the game to make the score 5-4 to Davydenko.

Second set: Game eight

Rallies have been few and far between in this match but both play their part in a 30-stroke plus rally at the start of the eighth game in the second set, which Roddick wins. The crowd are then treated to another ding-dong rally which the Russian takes this time with a fine backhand to give him advantage point before seeing out the game for a 5-3 lead.

Second set: Game seven

Roddick successfully holds serve. He is lucky he has such a useful weapon to fall back on as he makes a sluggish start to 2009. The score is now 4-3 in the second set to Davydenko.

Second set: Game six

Davydenko takes a 4-2 lead with more assured stroke play from the back of the court. His consistency is certainly not matched by Roddick.

Second set: Game five

Roddick belts a ball out of the stadium after a mix-up between the ball boys and the balls. Holds his nerve despite some boos from the crowd to trail 3-2 in the second.

Second set: Game four

Roddick's unforced error count is stacking up with every game. Two more in the fourth game of the second set allow his opponent to take a 3-1 lead.

Second set: Game three

A moment of comedy as Roddick is staring down the barrel of a Russian gun. He turns his back on the impending smash only for Davydenko to play the softest of shots over him. The Russian leads the second set 2-1.

Second set: Game two

"Whatever you can do, I can do too," is Davydenko's reply as he seals it with an ace. 1-1

Second set: Game one

Roddick's booming serve is his most powerful weapon and he uses it to devastating effect at the start of the second set as he attempts to claw his way back.

First set: Game 10

Davydenko breaks Roddick with a beautiful backhand and sees the game out to take the first set 6-4.

First set: Game nine

A tight affair. Both players scoring forehand winners and both hitting the net with sloppy shots. Roddick loses advantage point twice before holding out to win the game and reduce Davydenko's lead to 5-4.

First set: Game eight

Nothing spectacular from Davydenko. He does the basics well and that's why he has consistently been in the top 10 over the last five years. Forces Roddick into errors rather than pulverises with his own winners. Takes the game 40-15 for a 5-3 lead in the first.

First set: Game seven

The best rally of the match. Both players cover every inch of the court to the joy of the crowd before Davydenko brings the game to an end hitting a backhand effort out. He still leads Roddick 4-3 though.

First set: Game six

Brilliant build up play and clinical shots at the net sees Davydenko take the sixth game without dropping a point. He looks the better of the two players on early showing.

First set: Game five

The fifth is all about the power of Roddick as he pulls his socks up and punishes his opponent with some devastating play from the back of the court and the net to make it 3-2 to the Russian.

First set: Game four

Davydenko looks the more confident of the two players as Roddick struggles with the Russian’s array of shots and the soaring heat. However, A-Rod does battle back to bring the scores to 40-40 before Davydenko sees out the game for a 3-1 lead.

First set: Game three

Roddick struggles to find his range from the baseline which sees him make four unforced errors to give Davydenko advantage. The Russian draws first blood in breaking serve as Roddick once again overcooks a forehand shot. (1-2)

First set: Game two

Davydenko shows some clinical baseline shots to keep Roddick at bay to level the scores at 1-1.

First set: Game one

Roddick serves up three aces after going 0-15 down and finishes off with a cute backhand volley to win the first game 40-30.

Gilles Simon craves Slam success

Gilles Simon
Gilles Simon craves Slam success

Gilles Simon wants to do better at the Grand Slams and he is preparing his assault on glory at the Australian Open.

Simon is currently ranked 7th and he beat Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but in the Grand Slams he did not enjoyed good performances.

"I want to play better in the slams because I played a great year this year but I didn't reach the third round in any slam so that's one of my goals this year," he said.

"The top four players now are very far ahead, even if it's only three places before (me). They are really better than us and that's why I have to play good in the slams because that's the difference. If I am able to reach a semi-final or a final in the slams, then I'll try to get them." Simon added.

And Simon is confident that he could taste success against the best players in the world.

"The difference is not on the court when you play against them, because we saw last year I can defeat these players. But I know that during all the year they are far better, so that's the difference. You have to be at the top every week." Simon concluded.

Murray crushes Blake at Capitala World Tennis Championship

Andy Murray beat James Blake 6-2 6-2 and reached the semifinals at the Capitala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi where he will play Roger Federer.

"It's the first time I've played James in about three years so I expected it to be a tough match but I played much better than expected for the first match of the year." said Murray.

A flicked backhand cross-court winner and a powerful forehand hooked down the line gave Murray a double break for 4-1 and he served out the set in 23 minutes without facing a single break point.

Blake was broken at love in the start of the second set and wasted a break-back chance in the following game.

Murray was in full flow now and his superb returning overwhelmed Blake. He sealed another break with a delicate backhand lob over the helpless American and served out the match comfortably.

"That should be a fun match," said Murray about playing Federer.

"We played a few times last year and I played well against him but this is great preparation for the Australian Open. I'll try and keep the same form for tomorrow."

Capitals trying to acquire Roddick

Andy Roddick
Capitals trying to acquire Roddick

Andy Roddick plays for the St. Louis Aces at the World Team Tennis competition but The Capitals are trying to acquire him to play one or two matches next season.

Nielson, Sacramento co-owner, said he hopes to land Roddick for cash and possibly a draft pick "by the end of January, maybe sooner."

"They(St. Louis) have Anna Kournikova, and Andy not showing up last season helped them decide it might be time for a change," Nielson said.

Roddick would play one match for the Capitals at Allstate Stadium at the Galleria in Roseville and possibly one at Newport Beach. The Capitals have won a record six WTT titles.

Roddick's agent said his client has not decided whether to return to WTT for his sixth year and first since 2005.

"Sacramento is one of the premier franchises in the league and certainly one Andy would consider. He's very friendly with Wayne Bryan and probably would enjoy being coached by him." John Tobias said.

Nielson said the Capitals need a top draw after ticket sales fell 30 percent last season amid a weak economy.

Nielson also said Mark Knowles is expected to sign a three-year contract next month to return for his eighth season with the Capitals.
