David Nalbandian reaches quarterfinals in Buenos Aires

David Nalbandian scored a 6-7 6-4 7-6 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver to reach the quarterfinals of the Copa Telemex.

Juan Carlos Ferrero advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marcos Daniel. Santiago Ventura defeated Victor Hanescu 6-4 7-6, and Albert Montanes beat Pablo Andujar 6-3, 6-2.

The most gripping match was Nalbandian’s win over Gimeno-Traver, which lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes.

The Argentine led throughout the tiebreaker and held match point at 6-5, 7-6 and 8-7 before wrapping it up.

“I felt something in my abductor (muscle). … My trainer said perhaps I should not play on but I can’t do that in Buenos Aires with this crowd that gives me so much support,” Nalbandian said after the match.

Had he been playing anywhere else he would have pulled out on the spot, Nalbandian told a news conference later.

“The plan is to wait and see how it evolves. I really want to play on but we’ll wait and see,” he said.

David faces Albert Montanes in the quarter-finals.
