Feliciano Lopez defeated Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the Japan Open.
Del Potro, who is playing his second tennis tournament since January, lost to Olivier Rochus at the Thailand Open last week after being sidelined eight months because of a wrist injury.
Daniel Gimeno-Traver defeated Eduardo Schwank 6-4, 6-4 while Dmitry Tursunov made it past Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-4.
Rafael Nadal has a first-round bye and will play against Santiago Giraldo on Tuesday in the second round.
