Roger Federer vs Andy Roddick in Basel Semis

Roger Federer vs Andy Roddick in Basel Semis

Roger Federer crushed Radek Stepanek 63 62 to advance to the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel semifinals where he will play against Andy Roddick, a 64 64 winner over David Nalbandian.

Stepanek played a solid mauch and did very little wrong but Federer was simply too much and played brilliant, effortless tennis.

Both players started the match in great shape and played some nice rallies. Stepanek held his first two service games with some comfort But Federer found an extra gear and started unleashing some rasping backhands down the line. He broke in the sixth game of the opening set and continued to serve out to seal the first set.

The second set was more than the same, Stepanek served well during the first games until Federer stepped it up a bit and hit more winners to break his opponent twice for a 5-2 lead.

The former world number 1 closed the victory with an ace down the middle.

Federer's next opponent, Andy Roddick, is trying to make it into the last 8 that will compete for the Masters title in London.

Today, the American gave away precious little on serve, winning all but nine of the 40 points contested there. That left Nalbandian with little room for error on his own serve, and he was unable to produce a faultless performance as he conceded two breaks.

“I always look forward to playing (Roger),” said Roddick. “You want to play the best if you are an athlete and a competitor. You want to get out there and give it a go.”

"We've played a bunch of times, we've been in this situation before," said the American. "Playing Roger means you are far along in the tournament.

"As a competitor, you want to play the best, I always look forward to facing him."

Federer said his 19-2 career record against Roddick was not a fair reflection of their rivalry.

“He is much better than the head-to-head record shows. We’ve had a lot of close matches,” Federer said.
