Almagro wins Swiss Open Title after beating Gasquet

Nicolas Almagro defeated Richard Gasquet 75 61 in the Swiss Open final to win the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad title.

It is Almagro’s seventh title and the second of the year after Bastad two weeks ago.

Almagro received 250 ATP Ranking points and €68,450, while Gasquet earned 150 points and €35,980 in prize money.

Following his recent surge of good form, the Spaniard stated his goal for the rest of the season "is to reach the Top 10 and stay there."

Almagro went up 5-4 in the first set and was serving for it, but Gasquet broke back to level at 5-5. The Spaniard was able to break again in the following game and this time he held serve to win it.

Almagro broke to lead 2-1 in the second set. He took advantage of Gasquet's unforced errors and broke again for a 4-1 lead. The Spaniard broke once more in the seventh game to seal victory.

"I played my best tennis today," said Almagro. "I returned well and served amazingly. The altitude doesn't make it easier here, but it's nice to face that challenge. I realised during the first set that Richard had trouble with his serve."

"It wasn't easy from the beginning of the week," said Gasquet. "I just started serving on the Friday before the tournament because I had problems with my shoulder. It became worse last night. Also Nicolas was playing well so it was very difficult today."

"I tried to fight and focus well all week and thanks to that I made it to another final here," said Gasquet. "It's still a good week for me. This is a very beautiful tournament and it's always a pleasure to come here.

"Now I will try to be back in form as soon as possible and get ready for the hardcourt swing in the US."

Querrey vs Murray reach Farmers Classic final in LA

Querrey vs Murray reach Farmers Classic final in LA

Sam Querrey defeated Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 7-6 6-4 and made it into the Farmers Classic final in Los Angeles.

“That was an awesome match, a lot of fun, a lot of drama,” Querrey said.

Querrey lost the first set after holding five set points in the 12th game. The Serb failed to convert a match point in the 10th game of the second set, then blew a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker.

“I am happy by the way I played, but I should never lose this match,” Tipsarevic said. “I didn’t use the chances I had.”

Querrey reeled off six straight points, helped by a few big serves, to win the tiebreaker 7-5 when Tipsarevic netted a backhand.

“When I got it back on serve, I felt I had the momentum,” he said. “I got in a good rhythm.”

“I just missed too many easy balls trying to make a direct winner on them,” Tipsarevic said. “This season he has the wind at his back playing very well on all surfaces.”

“He managed to get out of two matches he should’ve lost,” Tipsarevic said. “When it’s important, he’s coming up with big shots.”

In the final, Sam Querrey will face Andy Murray, who Feliciano Lopez 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.

Murray broke Lopez three times while zipping through the first set. Lopez broke Murray three times as well in the second set to level the match.

The Scott broke in the opening game of the decider and then closed it out on his second match point to reach the final.

“Neither of us has played much since Wimbledon so maybe that explains the inconsistency,” Murray said.
