Del Potro crushes Stepanek at Indian Wells

Juan Martin del Potro defeated Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the BNP Parisbas Open at the Indian Wells.

Del Potro will will face Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.

The former US Open champion broke his opponent in the opening game of the match. Stepanek got the break back for 3-all, but was broken again. Del Potro won nine of the final 10 games to clinch the win in one hour and 24 minutes.

“I broke his serve very soon and took confidence with my serve,” said del Potro. “When I closed the first [set], I see much better my game, my forehand especially, and then I played a good match.”

“I played better than him,” Del Potro said. “I take all my opportunities, especially in the second set, and was very focused on my serve.”

The Argentine was out eight months following the wrist surgery but he is getting back to a sharp form.

“I was out a year, a long time,” he said. “Maybe I had my best form today. I can improve my game, everything, my serve and my approaches. I don’t know if I can play better or not, but I know the way to improve day by day. It’s a long road to be in the top players again. It’s very tough to play good tennis after a year out of competition, but I’m trying.”
