Stepanek upsets Verdasco in Washington

Radek Stepanek defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinal at the ATP tennis tournament in Washington.

Stepanek will play against Donald Young, who beat Marcos Baghdatis 63 76.

Stepanek broke Verdasco in the fifth game and never faced a break point, taking the first set on back to back service winners.

He denied Verdasco on 7-of-8 break points in the second set to win after one hour and 51 minutes.

“Every match is different, so I was trying to forget about it and concentrate on [today’s] match," said Stepanek when asked about his last 3 matches against Verdasco that he lost.

“I wanted to be aggressive from the first point on. In the key moments, I was aggressive and it paid off. I’m very happy with the way I played and now I can forget about the match at Wimbledon.”
