Djokovic wins in three in Basel
Djokovic wins in three in Basel
Novak Djokovic survived a scare against Belgian Xavier Malisse but finally prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the opening round of the of the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
"Every year for the last five years it’s a tradition at Halloween, which usually is during Paris-Bercy, that I go out with some crazy mask," explained Djokovic. "This year it happened one week earlier, so I hope that people don’t mind. It was just tradition and a little bit of fun."
Djokovic won the first set with two breaks of serve, but came under pressure in the second. He double-faulted to relinquish a break in the ninth game and Malisse seized his opportunity to draw level.

Fish gets injured in Basel, retires from match
Mardy Fish retired from his first-round match at the Swiss Indoors against fellow American James Blake on Tuesday after just one game because of a hamstring injury.
The fifth-seeded Fish held serve in the opening game and lost the first point of the next game when he decided the pain in his left leg would not allow him to continue.
Fish is hoping to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals for the first time. He is currently in the eighth and final qualifying spot for the tournament starting in London on Nov. 20. Although Fish cannot be overtaken this week, the last qualifying tournament is next week in Paris.

Five Reasons Novak Djokovic is the Best Sports Story of 2011
Five Reasons Novak Djokovic is the Best Sports Story of 2011
The 2011 year is still a few months away but by far the best sports story of the year is coming to a close without much attention. The 2011 season was full of big stories. The big three in Miami ran into the Big D in the NBA Finals. The St. Louis Cardinals fought off the Texas Rangers in one of the best playoffs in a long time. There was women's soccer, Cam Newton, The Packers' Super Bowl and meanwhile Novak Djokovic was slaying the world of men's tennis. There are five reason why Novak Djokovic is the best story in sports in 2011.
Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer
A few years ago the Tampa Bay Rays came out of nowhere and defeated the mighty Boston Red Sox and the even mightier New York Yankees. It was as if David had just defeated Goliath and decided, what the hell I'll lead 55,000 Carthaginians against 80,000 members of the Roman Army just for kicks. The Rays were possibly the number one cinderella story of all time.

Tsonga survives scare to advance at Valencia Open
Tsonga survives scare to advance at Valencia Open
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed to battle hard to get past Javier Marti 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the first-round match at the Valencia Open.
Tsonga had won 11 of his last 13 matches coming in, including titles at Metz and Vienna. But he trailed early due to unforced errors and the smooth backhand of the 19-year-old wildcard, who was playing his first match against a top-10 player.
While Tsonga complained about the streaks of sunlight on the City of Arts and Sciences indoor court, he settled toward the close of the second set after Marti double-faulted to be broken and served out the set on his way to victory.
