Juan Martin del Potro scored a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rui Machado to reach the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open.
Del Potro, who is the defending champion, will next face Albert Montanes, seeded seventh, advanced to last eight with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over American Bobby Reynolds.
Despite the scoreline suggesting otherwise, Delpo admitted Machado had tested him as he looks to build his form.
"I played well for only my first match after Davis Cup. The score might not have looked it but he's dangerous on clay," said Del Potro. "But I played much better than him and took all of my break points."
"I'm pleased with my performance, this was good for a first match of this part of the season." He added.
"I like to play on clay, I prefer hard courts obviously, but I have been working hard at home, before I came here. This tournament is very important to my clay-court season and for my confidence ahead of [ATP World Tour] Masters 1000 tournaments and Roland Garros."
Del Potro added, "Albert is a two-time former champion here and a very good clay-courter so it will be a tough match. I am looking forward to it."
