Delpo battles injury and Montanes in Paris

Juan Martin del Potro scored a 6-2 6-7 6-2 6-1 win over Albert Montanes to advance to the second round of the French Open 2012 in Paris.

The Argentine survived an injury scare after received treatment on a sore left knee at the end of the second set before motoring through to prevail with a service winner on his first match point.

He started brightly, sprinkling the court with forehand winners to open a 6-2 4-2 lead before seizing up as claycourt specialist Montanes fought back to take the second set tiebreak 7-5. Del Potro was able to put his game together and forget about the injury to take the third and fourth sets without much resistance from his opponent.

The Spaniard had 12 break point chance while Delpo had 11 but the problem was Montanes converted merely one to his opponent’s seven.

Del Potro will next play Edouard Roger Vasselin.

"I was struggling a little, but I had some good treatment which allowed me to finish the match," said Del Potro.

"Roland Garros is a physically-demanding tournament. I have to keep that in mind as I am playing well at the moment."
