Del Potro returns with win in Vienna
Juan Martin del Potro defeated Daniel Brands 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) in the second round at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
In a match that featured no breaks of serve, Del Potro hit 30 aces while Brands produced 32.
Brands closed out the opening set with an ace but double-faulted when Del Potro had set point in the second.
Del Potro won the decider on his second match point when Brands sent a backhand just wide.
“If I knew this was going to happen before, I would have stayed at home for sure,” del Potro joked.
"I played a nice match after a month without competition," said Del Potro.
"I served really well every moment of the match," said Del Potro. "I will train, practice all day, I need to improve day by day."
The Argentine will play either Dominic Thiem or Marinko Matosevic in the quarterfinals.
