It hasn’t gone to plan for Novak Djokovic this year. While he finally got his hands on a first French Open title at Roland Garros, the Serbian once again failed in his attempt to win all four major competitions in the same calendar year. In fact, Djokovic didn’t even come close at Wimbledon as he crashed out in embarrassing fashion against Sam Querrey in the third round.
But Djokovic has the perfect opportunity to bounce back and challenge for glory at the US Open later this year. On his day, the world number one is almost unbeatable and the hard court is without a doubt his favourite surface. While Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is maturing into a fine talent, Djokovic is still the greatest player on the planet and the Serbian will fancy his chances of notching yet another Grand Slam title.
And that is where the Serbian’s class has shone through in recent years. In an era of unpredictability, Djokovic has constantly been there or thereabouts in all four of the major events on a yearly basis. The world number one hasn’t had his greatest season but he knows that he is closing in on Roger Federer’s all-time record of 17 Grand Slam victories.
Eventually, Djokovic may pass the legendary Swiss star and the Serbian may finally receive the recognition that he deserves.
The tennis community are split on Djokovic. Some love him, others hate him; he’s like marmite in that regard. But you cannot deny his quality and ALL tennis fans appreciate his ability to perform at the top level on a consistent basis. If truth be told, the US Open is one of the hardest events to predict and shocks and surprises can happen on any given day. If Djokovic performs at his very best, it’s hard to see him falling short once again – especially as he hunts down Federer’s record. Without doubt, Djokovic is one of the very best players of all-time and another Serbian victory would enhance his legacy further in the history books...
