Del Potro sets up clash with Federer in Cincinnati 2011

Del Potro sets up clash with Federer in Cincinnati 2011

Juan Martin del Potro advanced to the second round in Cincinnati when injured Andreas Seppi retired in the opening set.

The Argentine set up a second-round rematch with Roger Federer. Del Potro beat Federer in the 2009 U.S. Open final.

“If I have a good day, maybe I can make a surprise,” said del Potro. “Not many players can beat Federer. I’ve already beaten him twice, so I know how to play him. But it’s Roger. He’s the favorite.”

Play began Sunday in the men’s draw at the tournament, which combines the Cincinnati Women’s Open and the Cincinnati Masters for the first time.

The opening match ended when Seppi withdrew because of an injured right foot with del Potro ahead 4-1 in the first set.
He won 17 of the 22 points in the first four games on Sunday, losing only one point off his serve.

“I felt confident in my forehand,” del Potro said. “My winners I set up well. I thought my serve was good. We only played (five games) but I felt like I hit pretty well.”

Seppi won his only game after a lengthy injury timeout to get treatment on his right foot. The Italian retired from the match immediately after that game.

Del Potro would have preferred more of a challenge in his opening match to get ready for Federer.

“It’s not nice when the match is as short as the one today,” he said. “But it happens.”

“When the weather is very humid I feel some pain,” Del Potro said about the injury he suffered last year. “But I feel like I can play and have success. It’s always special when you play Roger. I’ll need to play almost perfect.”

Seppi wins Eastbourne Title after Tipsarevic retires

Seppi wins Eastbourne Title after Tipsarevic retires

Andreas Seppi beat Janko Tipsarevic 7-6(5), 3-6, 5-3, after the Serbian retired with a right hip injury, and won the AEGON International title in Eastbourne.

"It's for sure a special moment for me," said Seppi. "I didn't expect to win my first title on grass, but I really enjoy playing on this surface."

After splitting the first two sets, Seppi raced to a 4-0 lead in the final set, before play was suspended because of rain.
When the match resumed, Tipsarevic clawed back to get on serve, to 3-4 but then he was broken again and subsequently retired after two hours and 35 minutes of play.

"It's a good feeling. It was just my second final... I played a lot of semis and I was also close to winning my first title in 2007, where I was serving for the match and lost. It's a special feeling to win the first title and I hope that I can enjoy it for a few days," Seppi said.

"I have to accept it, I lost. He was the better player than me today," admitted Tipsarevic.

“I’m taking an ultrasound now but it doesn’t look good,” Tipsarevic said. “I know matches are played here until late, but that is the case when there are no clouds and you have enough light.

“It’s an absolute disgrace. … what happened today. At 4-3, 15-all or love-30 when I slipped, I asked the chair umpire or the referee, ‘What else needs to happen for you to postpone this match?’ And he was just quiet. He was just repeating like a parrot that we have enough light, we have enough light.”

Medibank International: Lleyton Hewitt crushes Seppi to reach Sydney quarterfinals

Lleyton Hewitt scored a demolished 6-0, 6-2 win over Andreas Seppi at the Medibank International 2010 in sydney.

Hewitt won six straight games, then overcame an early service break in the second and won six more in a row to finish when Seppi double-faulted at match point.

“I’ve had match points against him and ended up losing - that scoreline today looks a lot better,” Hewitt said.

In the quarterfinals of the Sydney Medibank International, Lleyton Hewitt will play againstt Marcos Baghdatis, who beat Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-3.

“He had a couple of injuries and he’s bounced back well from those,” Hewitt said about Baghdatis. “He was always a class player. Great ball-striker and moves well from the back of the court.”

Baghdatis acknowledges that Hewitt is playing some solid tennis.

“He’s on fire,” Baghdatis said. “It’s just he has to keep healthy. It’s not very easy because a lot of guys now are fit. It’s a tougher, more physical game than before so it’s not that easy. I think you have to be unbelievable fit to get back in the top 10. That’s what I’m trying to do.

“I think he’s trying. He’s a great guy. He’s done a lot for this sport. I think he’s working out hard.”

Rafael Nadal advances in Cincinnati Master Series

Rafael Nadal advances in Cincinnati Master Series

Rafael Nadal scored a 7-6 7-6 victory over Andreas Seppi to advanced at the tennis Master Series event in Cincinnati.

Nadal showed flashes of quality and looked to be moving well, but will need to up his level for the bigger tests that lie ahead after making 42 unforced errors.

Nadal made a superb start, breaking in the first game of the match after chasing down a Seppi drop shot with all the hunger of old.

Seppi broke back in game six with Nadal gifting the break to his opponent with a double fault.

Seppi continued to pressure the Nadal serve and the Spaniard had to save a set point on his own serve before racing through the tie break.

Nadal mixed sublime play with wild hitting in the second set, although his quest for consistency was not aided by a couple of rain delays.

The first stoppage occurred with Seppi having a break point, but Nadal came back with a booming ace to hold serve.

The second set went into a tie-break which was halted by a brief shower and it was Nadal who retained his focus to close out the match.
