Rafael Nadal defeated Robin Soderling 7-6 7-5 to win the Capitala World Tennis Championship.

Both players held serve throughout the first set before Nadal won the tiebreaker. Then he broke decisively in the sixth game of the second set to claim the win.

Roger Federer defeated David Ferrer 6-1, 7-5 for third place.

Nadal said overtaking Federer was not his main focus for 2010.

"Everybody wants the No. 1 ranking, but, believe me, for me it is not my goal for this year. To play competitively throughout and win as many tournaments as I can, that is my goal. To be happy playing, to be healthy and to play like I have played over the last two days." said Rafa.

"After the end of the season, I didn't stop and practiced for two and a half weeks. I hope to have good tournaments in Doha, Australia and Rotterdam, and then have three weeks off because I have to rest a little in order to play the American season and play many seasons afterwards." he added.

Capitala World Tennis Championship: Soderling and Ferrer winners in day 1

Robin Soderling and David Ferrer opened day 1 at the Capitala World Tennis Championship exhibition tournament with tought wins.

Soderling defeated Wawrinka 7-6 7-6 while Ferrer upset Nikolay Davydenko 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Soderling will next play Roger Federer and Ferrer faces Rafael Nadal.

Davydenko said he still felt the effects of a recent illness and struggled to maintain his concentration.

“I was suffering from bronchitis last week and even had to visit the hospital,” he said. “I thought I was OK, but apparently it was not.”

Davydenko dominated the first set but lost his serve in the fourth and eighth games of the second to go into a third set. Davydenko then broke Ferrer in the fifth game of the decider, but Ferrer tied it at 4-4 before breaking again to seal the match.

“We both were playing from the baseline well but I could not get my serves right,” Davydenko said. “I was playing well, volleying well but I guess I lost concentration and then he (Ferrer) was replying well to my second serves in that final game.”

His coach, Eric Winogradsky, said, "Jo is simply not prepared enough to arrive and be effective."

"I am extremely disappointed not to be able to participate in the Capitala World Tennis Championship due to an injury. I hope that I will come to participate in years to come but in the meantime I wish everyone there a good event and best wishes for 2010." The Frenchman said.

Tsonga is still expected to play the Kooyong exhibition event ahead of the Australian Open.

Tsonga also withdrew from the SA Open as precation.

Nadal will also be relishing the possibility of meeting Davydenko again, the man he lost to in the final of the Shanghai Masters in October.

Rafael Nadal looks forward to play in Abu Dhabi

Rafael Nadal looks forward to play in Abu Dhabi

Rafael Nadal will have one thing on his mind when he kick-starts his 2010 campaign at the Capitala World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi later this month — that's playing well.

Nadal says he is looking forward to putting an injury-plagued year behind him and focusing on getting back to playing his best tennis.

"At the moment I just want to focus on playing well, winning matches and staying injury free during 2010."

"It all starts in Abu Dhabi and I can't wait to return to the event and compete against what is another strong line-up of the world's best players.

"The event is a great way to start the year and is the perfect warm up for the Australian Open. The fans and warm hospitality in Abu Dhabi make it a really enjoyable tournament to begin the season and I am very much looking forward to coming back."

Despite missing more than two months with knee problems, Nadal still enjoyed plenty of success on the court, including his sixth career Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open.

He won another five titles for the fifth straight year which saw him ranked No 1 for the first half of 2009. He also ended the year on a high after Spain sealed back-to-back Davis Cup wins following victory over the Czech Republic to become the first nation to successfully defend the title since Sweden in 1998.
