Davis Cup: Argentina 1 - Brazil 1

Leonardo Mayer pulled Argentina level with Brazil 1-1 on Friday in their first-round Davis Cup tie, defeating Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on clay in the Argentine capital.

Mayer was in control most of the way in a match that lasted 2 hours, 39 minutes.

Brazil took a 1-0 lead after the first singles when Joao Souza defeated Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in a match that finished in five hours.

Souza failed to convert two set points in the third set, but rallied to win the last two sets.

Roger Federer defeated Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-4 at the Rome Masters and advanced to the third round.

Federer will next play Juan Carlos Ferrero, who upset Gael Monfils.

Federer is on the hunt for his first Rome title after losing the 2003 and 2006 finals.

The Swiss left it late to actually decide on playing Rome, hoping that his body would give him indications of how he was holding up after Madrid.

He hit 16 winners in the first set and success on 12 of the last 15 points of the afternoon.

Brasil Open: Almagro cruises past Berlocq into semis

Nicolas Almagro defeated Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinal at the Brasil Open 2012.

Almagro won 70 per cent of his service points and hit six aces past Berlocq. The Argentine struck five double faults while Almagro converted three of his 11 break point opportunities for victory in 90 minutes.

Almagro, seeded first and ranked No. 11, will play Albert Ramos next.

Ramos upset Fernando Verdasco 7-6(5), 6-3 in one hour and 56 minutes to reach his first ATP World Tour semi-final.

Ramos won 79 per cent of his first serve points and converted the only break of serve in the second set to win the match.

Nicolas Almagro advanced to the quarterfinals of the Brasil Open 2012 after beating Victor Hanescu 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

Almagro never faced a break point during his victory, he had 12 aces and only one double fault.

Also, Carlos Berlocq defeated Potito Starace 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, while Albert Ramos ousted Igor Andreev 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).

Filippo Volandri improved to 3-0 lifetime against Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain after a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and nine minutes. Volandri converted three of his 11 break point opportunities.

Monaco beats Berlocq in Vina del Mar 2012 title

Juan Monaco beat Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-1to win the 2012 Vina del Mar VTR Open title.

Monaco claimed his first title since winning three in 2007. The victory marked a breakthrough for Juan, who lost in the final at this tournament in 2008 and 2010.

“The third time is lucky they say, so this time it’s true,” he said.

It was the first ATP final for Berlocq, who advanced after defeating second-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela.

Juan Monaco beat Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the VTR Open 2012 final in Vina del Mar.

Monaco will next play Carlos Berlocq.

Pico saved 11 of 13 break points and converted five of his nine opportunities to clinch victory in 87 minutes.

Berlocq advanced to his first ATP World Tour final after defeating Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.

Charly won nine of his 17 break point chances in the two-hour, 26-minute match.
