Thiem battles past Donskoy in season-opener at Doha

Dominic Thiem started his season with a hard-fought 7-6(3) 6-3 victory over Evgeny Donskoy in the first round of the Qatar Open in Doha.

The world number 5 won a staggering 92 percent of his first serve points to hold off a battling Donskoy, who pushed the 24-year-old to the brink in the opening set, and regained control in the second set to charge to victory.

"It was a good victory because (of a) tough opponent... after a pretty long period without any matches," Thiem said. "After a good start, it got pretty close in the first set... at the end I'm satisfied with most parts of my game."

Andy Murray Tops Stanislas Wawrinka to Win Doha Title

Andy Murray Tops Stanislas Wawrinka to Win Doha Title
Article from atptennis.com

Third seed Andy Murray one-bettered his result from last year's season opener, capping off the first week of the 2008 season by hoisting his fourth career ATP trophy with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over unseeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka on Saturday at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha.

Murray took advantage of five of his 13 break point opportunities, while Wawrinka converted on two of his five during the two hours, 28 minute match. Wawrinka leveled the match at a set apiece as Murray dropped serve at 4-5, but Murray denied the Swiss any chances the remainder of the way. Murray broke in the opening game of the third set and again to go up 5-2 before serving out the win.

The victory marked Murray's first in three attempts against his occasional practice partner. Wawrinka had defeated Murray on clay in Davis Cup competition three years ago and also on hard court at ATP Masters Series Miami in 2006.

The 20-year-old Murray improved to a 4-4 record in ATP finals by capturing his first outdoor title. He won his first ATP title in San Jose in 2006 and successfully defended his title last year before following with the St. Petersburg title in the autumn.

Murray reached the final this week with victories over Olivier Rochus, Rainer Schuettler, Thomas Johansson and top seed Nikolay Davydenko, recording a 6-0 set against each of his first three opponents.

Last year in Doha debut, Murray also posted a semifinal victory over top seed Davydenko before falling to Ljubicic in the final. He now has a 9-1 tournament record.

The World No. 11 enjoyed his best season to date in 2007 despite suffering a wrist injury and being sidelined for over three months. He broke into the Top 10 for the first time during the summer and spent nine weeks there.

Wawrinka, who came into the week ranked No. 36, surprised fourth seed and defending champion Ivan Ljubicic on Friday in the semifinals. He had not drop a set en route to his fifth career ATP final and had lost serve only twice.

The 22-year-old fell to 1-4 lifetime in ATP finals, claiming his only title in Umag on clay in 2006 when Novak Djokovic retired with respiratory problems after a set. Wawrinka was appearing in his first ATP title match since falling to Djokovic in Vienna last October, his only other appearance in a hard court final. His other two finals, in Stuttgart last year and in Gstaad in 2006, both came on clay.

Andy Murray, the third seed, plays Olivier Rochus in the first round. Andy ended his contract with coach Brad Gilbert last Novembe.
