Bryan brothers win US Open 2012 doubles title

Bryan brothers win US Open 2012 doubles title

Bob and Mike Bryan won the US Open 2012 doubles title after beating Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek 6-3 6-4.

The second-seeded Bryans had entered the U.S. Open tied with Australia's Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde for 11 grand slam doubles titles.

“When you're in the heat of the moment you don't want to think about that stuff. We're just trying to win the Grand Slam,” Mike Bryan said. “And now that we could chill a little bit, it's fun to have it. We looked up to the Woodies, and to break some of their records is unbelievable, because we idolise those guys. They're one of the reasons we play doubles. Just to be mentioned with those guys is pretty special. But to have a huge record like the Grand Slam record is really cool.”

Mirnyi and Azarenka win mixed gold at London Olympics

Mirnyi and Azarenka win mixed gold at London Olympics

Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi beat Andy Murray and Laura Robson 2-6 6-3 10-8 to win the Olympic mixed doubles gold medal.

The British pair bounded into an early lead, taking the first set comfortably.

The Belarusians hit back to take the second, however, to set up a tense championship tiebreak.

Mirnyi and Azarenka moved 9-6 ahead and although the British pair saved two match points Azarenka's sharp volley claimed Belarus's first gold medal in Olympics tennis.

Azarenka was asked about trying to play through the home crowd's loud support for their opponents. "It wasn't easy, for sure, but it was expected - I mean, if we came on court in London and everybody was cheering for us, it would be kind of weird, right?" she said. "We just tried to focus and take our chances because they were playing absolutely amazing. We just tried to stay in it and fight as much as we could. Once we had our chance, we were really focused on that.

Federer and Wawrinka lose in Olympic doubles

Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka lost to Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the second round of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

"I thought we played an excellent first set. Conditions were tough. They were breezy, a lot of shadow on the courts. But that didn't disrupt our great playing," said Federer.

"It was a pity we couldn't create a few more, maybe, opportunities throughout the second set. But obviously they found a bit of a way to get back into the match," he said. "They definitely played better once sort of the shadow went, all the flags, all the spectator shadows were gone. It was more clean tennis."

The Spaniards were beaten by Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

"I saw the balls and the court very fast today," said Nadal. "Everything happened very fast. I think we had a terrible second set. In the super tie-break we had to win. We had chances. That's doubles. The matches are close. You can win; you can lose. It wasn't our day. Let's try in singles now."

Kas and Peya go on to face fourth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.
