Novak Djokovic hoping for Belgrade move

Dutch Open Tennis Amersfoort
Novak Djokovic hoping for Belgrade move

Novak Djokovic in conjunction with his management group, are hoping to switch the Dutch Open in Amersfoort which has fallen on hard times due to its regular sponsor Krijco, a casino chain, ending its involvement to Belgrade.

"It is something that we have not been speaking about publicly but we closed out the deal with Amersfoort, the Dutch Open and we bought the licence from them to have a tournament in Serbia next year so this is our big goal. It is still not 100%. We still need to do some administrative work in the next couple of weeks, next couple of months." Djokovic said.

"I have spoken to the ATP board of directors and the official people from the ATP and they have said that if we have good enough conditions and if we bought the licence then it is more or less a formality but it's still not 100% for sure." Novak added.

Albert Montanes defeated defending champion, Steve Darcis at the Dutch Open to take his first career ATP title.

Montanes ended a nine-year drought without a title after a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Darcis who was defending 2007 title.

Albert Montanes, who is ranked 63 in the ATP ranking, previously had reached the final of an ATP event four times but this is the first time he is able to take one more step.

Montanes, 5th seed, started really slow in the final but overcame it to finally break through, winning 75 percent of his first-serve points and converting three breaks.

After getting routed in the first set, Montanes went up a break early in the second to battle his way back into the match and ultimately claim the first prize of $86,000.

Bidding for his third career title, Steve Darcis, 3rd seed, fired nine aces but committed five double-faults.

Steve Darcis Edges Towards Title Defense in Amersfoort

Steve Darcis Edges Towards Title Defense in Amersfoort

Steve Darcis came through a heavily rain interrupted clash with top seeded Frenchman Marc Gicquel to book his place in the Dutch Open Tennis final with a 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-5 victory in Amersfoort on Saturday.

Defending champion Darcis captured his maiden ATP singles title in Amersfoort on his second visit last year, knocking out World No. 13 Mikhail Youzhny in the semifinals before defeating Werner Eschauer in the final. He is now chasing his third title after claiming his second at Memphis earlier in the season.

With the first two sets shared, rain halted proceedings at 1-1 in the third set of the first semifinal of the day in Amersfoort. When play resumed, the 24-year-old Darcis came tantalizingly close to victory before rain once again interrupted play with Gicquel serving at 5-6, 0-30. However, when players returned to court. Darcis was able to maintain his advantage and four points later had closed out the match after 2 hr., 10min. Darcis also beat Gicquel in the Amersfoort first round last year.

"I'm very happy to be in the final here in Amersfoort once again," said Darcis. "I was nervous in the beginning of the match and a lot of this tension has to do with the fact I defend a lot of points this week. Tomorrow whatever I do it will be a bonus. I just want to enjoy the final tomorrow."

World No. 52 Gicquel was looking to reach his second ATP singles final of the season after finishing runner-up to David Ferrer at ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The 31-year-old also made quarterfinal exits at Estoril and Casablanca earlier in the season. He now slips to a 16-16 match record and to 2-5 lifetime against Belgian opponents.

Darcis, No. 56 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, is looking to become the first player to defend the Amersfoort title since Balazs Taroczy won five successive titles from 1978-82. The only other players this year to have defended titles are Rafael Nadal, Ivo Karlovic and Fabrice Santoro.

Having failed to win back-to-back ATP main draw matches on any other occasion this season prior to this week, aside from his title win in Memphis, Darcis now improves to 15-14 for the season.

In his third ATP singles final Darcis will face fifth-seeded Spaniard Albert Montanes, who capitalized on four of 12 break point chances as he knocked out compatriot Oscar Hernandez 6-1, 6-3.

"I think I played a very solid match," said Montanes. "We know each others games very well, so it it always hard to play Oscar (Hernandez). I am very happy to be in the final. This will be my fifth ATP final and I hope I can win this time. Steve (Darcis) is very solid from the back and always has a good backhand slice. This will be my first time playing against him, so I will try to play my game and see how it goes."

World No. 63 Montanes is through to his first ATP singles final since Casablanca last year and will look to win his first title after finishing runner-up at his four previous attempts. The 27-year-old Barcelona resident did not win back-to-back matches on the ATP circuit this season until April. Since then he has featured in the quarterfinals at Barcelona, Masters Series Hamburg and Stuttgart. He now improves to 19-16 for the season.

The 30-year-old Hernandez was looking to reach his first ATP final. The World No. 107 was contesting his second semifinal of the season after falling to James Blake at Houston; he also made quarterfinal exits at Costa do Sauipe, Casablanca and Warsaw.

Jose Acasuso And Albert Montanes To Clash In Quarterfinals

Albert Montanes
ose Acasuso And Albert Montanes To Clash In Quarterfinals

Second-seeded Argentine Jose Acasuso reached his first ATP quarterfinal since February with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the second round of the Dutch Open Tennis in Amersfoort on Thursday.

The 25-year-old Acasuso fired five aces, dropped just six points behind his first serve, and converted three of 11 break points to defeat World No. 190 Roger-Vasselin for the second time.

Buenos Aires resident Acasuso, currently No. 54 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, now improves to 18-16 for the season. His last quarterfinal appearance on the ATP circuit came at Acapulco (l. to Almagro), the week after he had finished runner-up at Buenos Aires (l. to Nalbandian). Since reaching the fourth round at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, the right hander, who had never been past the second round in Amersfoort in two previous visits, had only won three ATP main draw matches.

In the quarterfinals he will face fifth-seeded Spaniard Albert Montanes, who capitalized on two of 11 break points to knock out Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-4 to reach his fourth ATP quarterfinal of the season.

Acasuso won their first four meetings, three of which were on clay, before Montanes defeated the Argentine twice earlier this season, on clay at Masters Series Hamburg and Stuttgart last week.

World No. 63 Montanes did not win back-to-back ATP main draw matches until April, when he was a quarterfinalist at Barcelona (l. to Wawrinka) and has since reached the last eight at Masters Series Hamburg (l. to Djokovic) and Stuttgart (l. to Gasquet).

Since reaching the semifinals in Amersfoort (l. to Sluiter) on his debut in 2003, Montanes had fallen first round on his past three visits. He will look to reach his first ATP semifinal since 2007 Sopot (l. to Acasuso) on Friday.

Fourth-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers, survived an early scare to defeat compatriot Ivan Navarro 6-4, 6-4 and book his place in the quarterfinals.

Granollers slipped to a 0-3 deficit early in the match, before winning the next five games to take control of the first set. An early break in the second set then proved to be enough for the Barcelona resident to defeat Navarro for the first time at ATP-level.

World No. 57 Granollers, who is making his event debut in Amersfoort, captured his maiden ATP title at Houston (d. Blake) in April. He is through to his fourth ATP quarterfinal of the season, having also reached the last eight at Acapulco (l. to Acasuso) and Warsaw (l. to Monaco).

In the quarterfinals he will face compatriot Oscar Hernandez, who came through a rain-delayed match to knock out Dutch wild card Jesse Huta Galung 6-3, 6-2. It will be their first meeting on the ATP circuit..

Hernandez, currently No. 107 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, is through to contest his fifth ATP quarterfinal of the season; all have come on clay. He was defeated at Costa do Sauipe (l. to Moya), Casablanca (l. to Benneteau) and Warsaw (l. to Robredo), but went on to reach the semifinals at Houston (l. to Blake).

The 30-year-old Barcelona resident is making his sixth appearance in Amersfoort and is through to the quarterfinals for the first time since his debut in 2003, when he lost to Luis Horna. He had lost first round on his past two visits.

Martin Verkerk in tears after drama

Martin Verkerk
Martin Verkerk in tears after drama

Martin Verkerk, 2003 Roland Garros finalist, has had 3 terrible years facing 2 shoulder surgeries and being out of the tennis world.

Since a month ago Verkerk has been trying to get back in the game and he was getting nice results and had a new coach but during the Dutch Open he sprained his ankle and will have to be a few weeks out of the courts again.

“I had three years of misery. I know I can deal with this injury, that I can play tournaments again in September. But after all that I’ve been through, it is very hard. Everything was going so well. After nine tournaments, number 270 in the world, and Tjerk Bogstra my new coach, and now this.” Verkerk said.

Verkerk knows he will return.
“This injury will not stop me, that goes without saying. I have no doubts that I will return to the top 100. But I will have to start from scratch. I should be glad it is not another shoulder injury. That would’ve been a disaster. It went well, even though I wasn’t healthy. I was already suffering from my groin and had to be careful. But even in that condition I could have won. That’s a shame, because I see the Dutch Open as my tournament. I won here in 2004 and have fond memories of this event. That is why it is such a shame.”

This injury happened when he was playing against Roger-Vasselin, they were in the third set, 4-3. The Dutchman had already lost three matchpoints in the tiebreak of the second set. He misstepped and sprained his ankle.

Let's hope that after this time out he can get 100% ready to be back.

Martin Vasallo Arguello advances in Amersfoort

In 2007 Martin Vassallo Arguello did not had a very good experience at the Dutch Open. He was defeated by Mikhail Youzhny in the first round but the 7th seed changed his chances for this year after wining his opening match today.

Vassallo Arguello was the only seeded player that was in action, he faced Alberto Brizzi who past the qualy to play in the main draw and the Argentine was able to take the match in 2 sets, 6-4, 6-3.

This victory help Martin to improve his ATP level record that is not very good this season, he is 4-10. He is doing much better at the challenger level.

In the second round Vassallo Arguello will play against Teimuraz Gabashvili, three-time 2008 titlist on the ATP Challenger circuit.
Gabashvili, advanced to the second round with a 6-2 and 7-6 win over Thierry Ascione.
