Del Potro grinds down Raonic in Miami

Juan Martin del Potro defeated Milos Raonic 5-7 7-6(1) 7-6(3) in a marathon quarter-final at the Miami Open.

Del Potro fed off the energy of a raucous crowd that was firmly behind the Argentine, wearing down Raonic in a match lasting almost three hours.

The clock had just struck midnight on an unusually cool evening when fifth seed Del Potro finally dispatched Raonic.

Chung advanced to the quarter-finals, where he will play either world number one Roger Federer or France's Jeremy Chardy.

Francis Tiafoe reached the semifinals of the Delray Beach Open on the eighth match point, beating Hyeon Chung of Korea 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday.

Tiafoe failed to take advantage of three match points on Friday night before rain delayed the match.

Chung Hyeon will miss next week’s Sofia Open after failing to recover from the foot injury that forced him to retire from his Australian Open semi-final against Roger Federer.

Hyeon, who beat Novak Djokovic in the fourth round at Melbourne Park, has climbed from 58th to 29th in the world, the highest ranking achieved by a Korean player.

Grigor Dimitrov faces a race against time to get fit to defend his title in Sofia after shoulder pain and exhaustion prevented him from practicing.

Federer into Australian Open final after Chung quits

Roger Federer handed Chung Hyeon an old-fashioned schooling before the South Korean quit trailing 6-1 5-2 in a damp squib of an Australian Open semi-final on Friday.

The 36-year-old was all over the world number 58 throughout a one-sided contest under the Rod Laver Arena roof, breaking three times to win the opening set in 33 minutes.

When Chung held serve to make it 1-1 in the second set a huge cheer went up from the Australia Day crowd who had hoped to witness a classic battle of the generations.
