Dominic Thiem claimed his first Masters 1000 title after coming from a set down to defeat Roger Federer 3-6 6-3 7-5 and win the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Momentum swung in Thiem's favor in the deciding set when he smacked a forehand winner down the line to break Federer and take a 6-5 lead.

The Austrian fell on his back and covered his face with his hands when Federer, who had been bidding for a record sixth Indian Wells title and 101st tournament victory, netted on match point.

Roger Federer will face Dominic Thiem for the 2019 Indian Welss title.

Federer advanced after Rafa Nadal withdrew due to injury while Thiem defeated Milos Raonic 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (3/7), 6-4.

Nadal couldn't take the court for the blockbuster semi-final with Swiss great Federer.

"I wanted to try my best to be competitive today," a dejected Nadal said. "I warmed up today in the morning, and I felt that my knee was not enough good to compete at the level that I need to compete, to play semi-finals match of this event."

Rafael Nadal withdrew from the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, done in once again by a knee injury.

He had been set to play longtime rival Roger Federer in the semifinals.

A somber Nadal announced his withdrawal a couple hours before he was scheduled to take the court at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Rafael Nadal withstood the challenge of Karen Khachanov to set up a blockbuster semi-final with Roger Federer at the ATP Indian Wells Masters Friday despite a flare-up of right knee trouble that required mid-match treatment.

Nadal dominated both tiebreakers to beat the towering Russian 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/2).

He booked a 39th career meeting with Federer who breezed past Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 6-4, 6-4.

Milos Raonic defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3 6-4 at the BNP Paribas Open and reached the semifinals.

Raonic fired 13 aces against no double faults in putting away Kecmanovic in 72 minutes.

“Even when I was hitting the spots, I wasn’t hitting them that well,” Raonic said of his serving. “I think that can get better.”

Dominic Thiem reached the semifinals at Indian Wells Masters without hitting a ball as injured Gael Monfils withdrew.

Monfils pulled out shortly before his scheduled quarter-final against Thiem with left Achilles tendon trouble.

Oft-injured Monfils said he'd felt discomfort in his ankle for a couple of days and had been receiving treatment, but the pain was worse after his fourth-round win over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Wednesday night.

Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal remained on course for a mouthwatering semi-final clash at the BNP Paribas Open with straightforward fourth-round victories.

Federer needed just over an hour to dispatch Kyle Edmund 6-1 6-4 in their first career meeting and reach the quarter-finals on a sunny and breezy day in Indian Wells.

Next up for Federer is Hubert Hurkacz, who defeated Denis Shapovalov 7-6(3) 2-6 6-3 earlier in the day to set up his first career meeting with the Swiss Master.

Miomir Kecmanovic was up 6-4 when Yoshihito Nishioka retired with an injury from their fourth round match making him the last Serb standing at the ATP Indian Wells Masters.

"I did not see that coming, not at all," said Kecmanovic as he found himself the only one of five Serbs in the men's main draw to reach the last eight.

"It will be funny, that somebody other than Novak is still in," Kecmanovic said.

Kecmanovic wasn't even supposed to be in the field, after falling short in pre-tournament qualifying. But he gained entry to the second round when an elbow injury forced fifth seed Kevin Anderson out.

Rafael Nadal beat Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-1 to reach the fourth round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters.

Nadal took his record against the world No. 26 to 7-0 in emphatic style, never facing a break point in a match lasting an hour and 16 minutes.

"I did a lot of things well. I started the match very well," Nadal said. "My serve worked very well, especially in the first set. But during the second, I was doing things well anyway, so just happy having a match that I suffered in the past against Diego. We know each other well, so it's a positive victory for me."

Philipp Kohlschreiber upset Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.

The German punched the air in celebration after a video review confirmed that his forehand winner caught the line on match point to seal the upset victory in Indian Wells.

Nole looked out-of-sorts throughout the 98-minute contest. He committed 27 unforced errors, converted just one of his five break point opportunities and destroyed his racket at one point when frustration boiled over on a sunny day in the Southern California desert.

A sick Alexander Zverev was sent packing from the BNP Paribas Open with a 6-3 6-1 defeat by fellow German Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round at Indian Wells, California on Monday.

The night match between world number one Novak Djokovic, who is playing his first tournament since his Australian Open triumph in January, and Philipp Kohlschreiber was suspended with the top seed leading 1-0.

Struff saved all four break points he faced and took barely an hour to clinch his first career win over Zverev in five attempts.

Milos Raonic survived a scare from 217th-ranked qualifier Marcos Giron Monday, rallying in the third set for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the third round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters.

Giron, 25, looked set to claim the biggest win of a career that has been hindered by two hip operations when he took a 4-1 lead in the third set.

But Raonic called on all of his experience to turn things around against the American, who had never won two ATP Tour matches in a row until this week.

Rafael Nadal raced into the third round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters as Roger Federer made a less speedy but still successful start to his quest for a sixth title on Sunday.

Nadal needed just 72 minutes to get past overmatched Jared Donaldson, 6-1, 6-1.

Federer looked set for a similarly easy time of it, but had to turn back a second-set challenge from German Peter Gojowczyk in a 6-1, 7-5 win.

Federer said he was relieved not to go to a second-set tiebreaker after falling behind 3-1 to the free-swinging German, who is ranked 85th in the world.

Roger Federer is looking forward to having more freedom and more time with his family when he eventually leaves behind the sport he has dominated, the Swiss master said on Wednesday.

The evergreen veteran won his landmark 100th career title in Dubai during the weekend but told reporters that while he is not yet ready to hang up the racquet, he can see himself enjoying his post-career life.

"I want to keep it as flexible as possible when it is all said and done," Roger said at Indian Wells.
