Young vs Karlovic in Delray Beach Open final

Young vs Karlovic in Delray Beach Open final

Donald Young scored a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 semifinal victory over Bernard Tomic and reached the Delray Beach Open final.

Young will face Ivo Karlovic, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Adrian Mannarino. At a week shy of his 36th birthday, Karlovic, the 2010 runner-up, is the oldest finalist in the 23-year history of the tournament.

Against Tomic, Young hit eight double faults in the swirling wind - two in a row to lose his serve in the fifth game of the first set--but he also saved seven of 10 break points, including two at 4-4 in the second set, another while serving at 3-1 in the third and two more to hold for 5-2.

"I took a two-hour nap before the match and woke up irritated," said Young, who admitted that he was bothered by everything from the way a ball boy handed him his towel to the engine-revving of a courtside promotional car. "Usually those days don't turn out too well."

Croatia takes 2-1 lead over Japan in Davis Cup

Ivo Karlovic and Ivan Dodig overpowered Tatsuma Ito and Yuichi Sugita 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in doubles as Croatia took a 2-1 lead over Japan in their first-round Davis Cup World Group series.

Karlovic made the most of his powerful serve, combining with Dodig for 24 aces in a match that lasted 2 hours, 50 minutes.

Croatia captain Zeljko Krajan replaced Lovro Zovko after determining that Dodig was in good shape after Friday’s five-set loss to Go Soeda that took more than 4 hours, and the move paid off.

“Ivo and Ivan played great today,” Krajan said. “It’s a big difference between 2-1 up and 2-1 down. Tomorrow we have to win one out of two matches, not two out of two matches. We are in a little bit better position than them.”

Federer into fourth round at Australian Open

Federer into fourth round at Australian Open

Roger Federer advanced to the fourth round with a 7-6 (6), 7-5, 6-3 over Ivo Karlovic at the 2012 Australian Open.

The former world number 1 will next play against the winner of Aussie Bernard Tomic, who upset Alexandr Dolgopolov in 5 sets.

Karlovic held a set point in the first-set tiebreaker, but that was the closest the Croatian player would come to holding any advantage in the match which featured few service-break opportunities and even fewer long rallies.

This was Federer´s 813th victory in 998 matches.

“I don't know how it feels to play 1000 matches,” Roger Federer said with a slight smile. “I'm only at 999, right?”

R. FEDERER/I. Karlovic 7‑6, 7‑5, 6‑3

Q. Obviously crucial point was the first set when you had a set point. Talk me through the Federer lob. Was it a good shot? Did you mistime the shot?

IVO KARLOVIC: Well, I don't know. It is like one in, I don't know, hundred that I'm going to lose that point. I don't know. It was really unlucky, you know.

I didn't really expect him to do that, but I was there. You know, I just, how you say, miscalculate how much on his jump. It was really unlucky.

Then, you know, if I would have won that, everything would have been different. But that is life, you know. Tennis, that's how it is.

Nishikori to face Sweeting in Houston final

Nishikori to face Sweeting in Houston final

Kei Nishikori defeated Pablo Cuevas 6-3 7-5 and will next met Ryan Sweeting, who upset Ivo Karlovic 7-6 6-3, at the U.S. Clay Court Championship final in Houston.

Sweeting survived three break points in the fourth game and rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the tie breaker with five consecutive points to take the first set.

The American broke to take a 4-2 lead in the second set and closed out the match on serve.

“I feel great here in Houston,” Sweeting said. “Ivo had a three-hour match and was in a little bit of pain out here today. I knew he’d be serving big, but you can’t let that bother you. You’ve just got to take care of your own serve.

“It’s good to get to my first final here in the States and here in Houston.”

"I had trouble with allergies today and I was not at my best," Karlovic admitted after the match. "I could not breathe properly and I felt worse and worse as the match progressed. But all in all it was a good week. Ryan played really well and i wish him all the best in the final."

In their semifinal encounter, Cuevas got the break in the fourth game of the second set but Nishikori broke back in the following game.
Pablo broke again in the sixth game but his opponent recovered by breaking him back in the 11th games. Nishikori saved two break points to close the match with a forehand volley.

“I played great today, grinding away despite not being good on serve. It was tough conditions, hot and humid, but I battled through,” said Nikishori.

Nishikori is currently ranked 61st, but would better Shuzo Matsuoka’s career best of 46th, if he defeats Sweeting, to become Japan's best tennis player in history.

“It’s not like I can promise to win, but with the conditions in Japan I hope I can win tomorrow and give them a little bit of hope. It’s always in my mind but when I play my match I have to concentrate.”
