Sock calls Citi Open surface probably 'worst court on tour'

Jack Sock called the surface at the Citi Open "probably the worst court on tour" after losing to Kevin Anderson 63 64 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Despite winning his first three matches at the hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open, Sock said he was upset about the conditions in Washington all week.

"Pretty shocking tennis court," Sock said. "I don't think I'll be back at this tournament probably in the future. It's probably the worst court of the year. Speed, bounces, everything. It's pretty shocking."

Sock, ranked 19th, has played this tournament every year since 2013.

Sock wins Delray Beach final in walkover as Raonic withdraws

Sock wins Delray Beach final in walkover as Raonic withdraws

Milos Raonic pulled out of Delray Beach Open final, handing Jack Sock the title by walkover.

Raonic withdrew due to a hamstring tear in his right leg, an injury he said he had picked up while beating Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets in a semi-final.

"I didn't think much of it," Raonic said. "I thought it was just tightness from the match, but this morning I woke up unable to walk properly and did quite extensive treatment with my team.

"We came down to the conclusion that it was a slight tear of the hamstring in my right leg."

“It’s disappointing in a lot of ways,” said Raonic. “I’ve been unfortunate with injuries and have been doing everything I can to prevent them. It’s been three tournaments in a row where I’ve sustained some sort of muscle damage. And it’s disappointing for the sole fact that you’re one match away from a title. It’s not easy to accept."

Sock’s second ATP title of the year followed his Auckland Open victory last month.

Raonic also withdrew from Acapulco playing this week.

The American did not drop a set all week. He has an 11-1 record this year and is expected to rise to 18th in the world rankings on Monday.

“It’s very unfortunate for him and I hope he has a speedy recovery. We’ve had a lot of good battles and I was looking forward to the challenge,” said Sock. “I’d be a little more excited and full of energy if I had gone out and won it on court, but on the flip side, a title is a title.”

Sock said that Raonic notified him personally about the withdrawal right before Sock was set to warm up for their match.

“You’ve got to look ahead with some big tournaments coming up,” said Sock. “If you try to play with something that’s tweaked or a little hurt, it can only get worse. I can speak from surgery that I had a few years ago with my pelvis. I played on it for five extra weeks and tore it completely.”
