Austrian Open in Kitzbuehel dropped from ATP calendar

Austrian Open in Kitzbuehel dropped from ATP calendar

All the Austrian tennis fans had received a bad new today... The Austrian Open has been dropped from the ATP World Tour calendar after a legal dispute with local authorities over the tennis stadium in Kitzbuehel.

The ATP said that the tournament rights have now been moved to Nice, France, for at least the next five seasons.

According to tournament director Ronnie Leitgeb, the local city council of Kitzbuehel refused to sign an agreement on the terms of use of the stadium.

Leitgeb said a main sponsor for the tournament had already been found.

Last season Poertschach was dropped out of the ATP Calendar and now the Austrian Open in Kitzbuehel but there is still the BA Tennis Trophy in Vienna.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeated Julien Benneteau 3-6 7-6 6-3 after three hours and 10 minutes of play to win the Interwetten Austrian Open Kitzbuehel.

This is the first ATP event that Garcia-Lopez wins.

The spaniard posted three consecutive wins over seeded opponents en route to the final, beating Mikhail Youzhny in the semi-finals, Victor Hanescu in the quarter-finals and Martin Vassallo Arguello in the second round.

Benneteau was trying to become the first lucky loser to win an ATP World Tour title since Sergiy Stakhovsky in Zagreb in March 2008.

The Frenchman took the opening set in 49 minutes, taking advantage of six Garcia-Lopez double faults. The Spaniard struggled on second serve points, winning just one of 11 while losing serve three times.
In the second set, both players exchanged early breaks in the third and fourth games before holding the rest of the way.
In the tie-break, Garcia-Lopez raced out to a 4-0 lead and went on to win 7-1, leveling the match after two hours.

In the third set, Benneteau was under constant pressure, saving four break points in the opening game and then saving four more in the seventh game before Garcia-Lopez converted on his ninth break attempt. He held for 5-3 and then broke the weary Benneteau again in the ninth game to secure the three hour-plus victory.

Garcia-Lopez converted five of 18 break points while saving four of eight on his serve. Both players struggled serving as Benneteau double-faulted nine times and Garcia-Lopez eight times.

Victor Hanescu defeated Nicolas Lapentti 6-7 6-3 7-5 for a place in the second round at the Interwetten Austrian Open Kitzbühel.

Hanescu managed to convert four of 14 break point opportunities for victory in two hours and 46 minutes. He won 68 of 90 service points, including five aces. He improved to 8-14 on the 2009 ATP World Team season, highlighted by two quarter-final exits at Doha and Casablanca.

Mikhail Youzhny made it past Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2 7-6 in one hour and 35 minutes. It was the pair’s second meeting in four weeks, after Youzhny won in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome.

He will next look to win back-to-back matches on the ATP World Tour circuit for the first time since early January, when he advanced to the Chennai semi-finals.
