Nadal and Djokovic to test injuries at Kooyong

Nadal and Djokovic to test injuries at Kooyong

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will use the Kooyong Classic starting Tuesday as a convenient emergency stop to gain much-needed match practice as the pair return from injury in time for the Australian Open.

Not since the glory days of Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras nearly two decades ago and more recently Roger Federer, has the long-time exhibition event hosted as distinguished a field.

The upcoming edition will feature five of the world's top 10, including David Goffin, Dominic Thiem, Croat Marin Cilic and Pablo Carreno Busta.

The Kooyong Classic tennis tournament organizers are very ambitious and are trying to sign Rafael Nadal ( who has been out of the tour since June with a knee injury), Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer or Andy Murray for the January 9-12 event.

"We're in touch with the top four," tournament director Colin Stubs said.

"Nadal's a possibility and that'd be something special for us because he's never played here."

Juan Martin del Potro, Janko Tipsarevic, Juan Monaco, Milos Raonic, Lleyton Hewitt, Kei Nishikori and Marcos Baghdatis are already in.

The event guarantees players three competitive matches on the same surface used at the Australian Openthe following week.

Tomic beats Fish to win Kooyong 2012 title

Bernard Tomic beat Mardy Fish 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to clinch the title at Kooyong Classic 2012, an invitational warmup tournament for the Australian Open.

Tomic, who plays Fernando Verdasco in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday, broke Fish’s serve in the last game and sealed the match with a forehand down the line.

"There's only three or four guys on tour who can play all day and he's one of them," Tomic said.

"I'll need to come out, be aggressive and be fast like the first few matches I was playing at Kooyong and if I play like that, and to his backhand corner deep, I think he can't really hurt me."

Austrian Jurgen Melzer beat Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-7 (10), 6-2 for third place.

Bernard Tomic upset Gael Monfils 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 to advance to the final of the Kooyong Classic.

Tomic will now face the winner of the match between Mardy Fish and Jurgen Melzer.

"I'm getting confidence this week for the Open and hope to carry it through," said Tomic. "We came here for a good week and that's what I'm having."

Monfils said he was troubled by a recurrent knee problem.

"I need to take care of my knee all of the time, I can hurt it with my movement," said the Frenchman. "It was also cold at the start and then hot and my knee doesn't really like that."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost 6-4, 6-3 to Austria’s Jurgen Melzer while Mardy Fish beat Milos Raonic 61 62 at the invitational Kooyong Classic.

Cold, blustery conditions made it difficult for players.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve really felt 100 percent healthy, which I do now,” said Fish. “And now I just need the matches and I need to get going again.”

Raonic withdrew from the eight-man tournament after the loss, citing an upset stomach.

Lleyton Hewitt wins Kooyong Tennis Classic

Lleyton Hewitt defeated Gael Monfils 7-5 6-3 to win the invitational Kooyong Tennis Classic in Melbourne.

Hewitt appeared in great touch but Monfils was clearly restricted in his movement and grimaced repeatedly when chasing down returns.

The Frenchman said he had struggled to recover from a knee injury but it was a back problem that afflicted him in the final against Hewitt.

“I felt something,” Monfils said. “I hope it’s not major. That’s why I took it easy in the end. I started to feel it more but I think it should be okay.”

Hewitt also beat Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny at the Kooyong Tennis Classic.

“It’s as good as I could have done,” Hewitt said. “The last two weeks I’ve done everything possible for me. I feel like my game is where I wanted it to be 10 weeks ago and physically I feel good, which is a good thing.

“We feel like we’ve done the best preparation possible,” he added.

Rain dampens spirits at Kooyong Classic

Rain dampens spirits at Kooyong Classic

Persistent rain suspended the Kooyong Classic tennis exhibition today, leaving organisers with headaches to cobble a working schedule.

Because of the rain that began yesterday the match Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jurgen Melzer scheduled for last night was also suspended.

Tsonga and Melzer have agreed to play a one-set decider on Friday to produce a semi-finalist so the winner would then be marched straight into the semi-final against Gael Monfils.

“It’s a way at least (to) allow us to hold a final on Saturday with some measure of credibility,” said crestfallen tournament director Colin Stubs.

“I’ve never seen weather come from the northeast like this in 23 years at this tournament.”

Andy Murray was going to play an exhibition match with Marin Cilic at the tournament but it was also suspended and it is unlikely that the Scott would be able to get a rescheduled the match.

“Precedence has to go to the matches of the players who signed up. Andy didn’t,” said Stubs.

Kooyong Classic: Hewitt beats Youzhny and Monfils battle past Verdasco

Kooyong Classic: Hewitt beats Youzhny and Monfils battle past Verdasco

Lleyton Hewitt beat Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 and Gael Monfils scored a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Fernando Verdasco at the Kooyong Classic tennis exhibition.

Nikolay Davydenko was also a winner after defeating Tomas Berdych 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

This tournament is the last warm up event these players will play before the Australian Open next week. Monfils commented he thinks Hewitt, who reached the Australian Open final once, can do weel in 2011.

“I think mentally Lleyton is very strong and what I heard and what I read he’s fresh because he had a long period off and he had 10 weeks of good training,” Monfils said.

“And as we know, Lleyton is strong mentally and is a big champion and he showed last year that he could win against (Roger) Federer. And this year I think he decided to play only the majors so, yeah, I think he can win a major again.”

Hewitt said his Open campaign was well on track after his solid workout.

“It’s a quality field here and none of the matches are going to be easy,” Hewitt said. “Mikhail had a great finish to last year, making the semis of the U.S. Open and winning in Kuala Lumpur. He’s a quality player and we’ve had some really tough battles in the past so it’s nice to win the first one. He’s dangerous at all four majors—he could make a run at any one of them.”

Hewitt said he was happy with his performance at the Hopman Cup and at Kooyong.

“I’ve played four quality players and hit the ball pretty well and feel like I’ve got better,” he said. “Obviously today was totally different conditions to Perth but that’s good for me going into Melbourne.”

Hewitt said he was still unsure of his overall fitness.

“It’s hard to say, you don’t know what’s around the corner,” he said.

“I was feeling pretty good coming into the Hopman Cup last year and all of a sudden in practice I hurt my other hip. I can only do the preparation I’m able to do and I feel like I’ve prepared as well as possible.”

Fernando Verdasco defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5 6-3 to win the Kooyong Classic ahead of the Australian Open 2010.

Verdasco broke Tsonga late in the first set and then twice early in the second to claim the win at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.

“I think that is—and I hope—that is going to help me a lot to be ready for the next two weeks,” Verdasco said. “It was really windy and really tough to play so … if I play as good as I play with this wind I think I can really play so good if it’s no windy.”

Verdasco played solidly in all three matches this week.

He first beat Robin Soderling in straight sets and then crushed Novak Djokovic 6-1 6-2.

At the Australian Open 2010, Fernando Verdasco will play against Carsten Ball in the first round.

“It’s tough draw, is very tough, starting with one guy that is going to have whole lot of people supporting him, you know, all the country,” said Verdasco.

Kooyong Classic: Andy Murray beats Sam Querrey

Kooyong Classic: Andy Murray beats Sam Querrey

Andy Murray defeated Sam Querrey 6-1, 6-4 at the Kooyong Classic.

Murray played this special tennis match at the Kooyong Classic tennis exhibition because he wanted one more match outdoors ahead of the 2010 Australian Open.

It was a good much but the intensity was far from what they will face next week at Melbourne Park.
Murray used the match to continue testing some of the techniques he has been developing in his game in recent months, with his forehand, hit with more spin and more power, particularly effective against Querrey who has a huge serve and great reach.
The world number 5 said he was satisfied with what he got from the match and he will now wind down his practice routine to be fresh for the Australian Open.

"It was windy but I could just work on a few things like coming forward and hitting some volleys," Murray said. "I've been working on that part of my game and it worked well. I enjoyed myself today."

Kooyong Classic: Soderling retires against Ljubicic

Robin Soderling was forced to retired from his tennis match against Ivan Ljubicic after losing the opening set 6-4 at the 2010 Kooyong Classic.

"It was better yesterday, today I felt it a little bit more, so I figured I didn't want to take any more risks," said Soderling. "A lot of times, it gets better in just a couple of days, so with some rest and some treatment, I really hope I will feel good next week."

Soderling said he would not play another match at Kooyong Classic tennis exhibition and declined to talk about his chances of playing the Australian Open.

“100 percent I will try, you know, of course I will try. Hopefully it will work, but you never know this.”

Juan Martin Del Potro also withdrew from the tennis event with a wrist injury.
