Nishikori wins Malaysian Open

Nishikori wins Malaysian Open

Kei Nishikori won the Malaysian Open after beating Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7/4), 6-4. He is now the first Asian to win the Malaysia tournament.

The showdown at a packed Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur got off to a cracking start.

Benneteau took an early hold of the tie to lead 3-1, but Nishikori showed resilience, powering back to draw level before going on to clinch the first set 7-6 (7/4), including two sublime back-hand volley winners at full stretch.

A single break in the second set proved enough for the world number eight to seal the match, boosting his chances of reaching the World Tour Finals in London in November.

Juan Monaco defeated Kei Nishikori 64 26 76 to advance to the Malaysian Open 2012 final.

The Argentine will next meet Julien Benneteau, who surprised David Ferrer 6-4, 6-1.

Pico saved one match point at 2-5 in the deciding set on his way to a two hours and 43 minutes victory.

"Nishikori played very well," said Monaco. "He came back in the second set, playing better than me. The final set was up and down, he had one match point, then I fought back and I am very happy the way I finished the match. I think the crowd enjoyed it."

"He just played well and I don’t think I played badly," said Nishikori. "He served great and hit the ball well. I stopped hitting and playing inside the baseline."

Kei Nishikori upset Nicolas Almagro 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of the Malaysian Open.

Nishikori will face Janko Tipsarevic, who advanced after Nikolay Davydenko retired with a left hip injury.

“I don’t know what the injury is exactly yet,” Davydenko said. “I’m a bit scared as I’ve never had anything like it before. I will still go to Beijing, maybe wait a few days and see what the pain is like.”

Troicki vs Baghdatis in Malaysia semifinals

Viktor Troicki beat Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-4 to set up a semifinal clash with Marcos Baghdatis at the Malaysian Open.

"We both returned pretty well, that's why there were maybe more breaks than usual," said Troicki. "My focus went down a bit maybe [at the end of the second set], but it was good to close it out in two sets. It's helping my confidence to get some wins here. I lost early in Cincinnati and at the US Open so my confidence wasn't great coming in here. Getting to another ATP semi-final helps me a lot."

Baghdatis upset Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 7-6(3). He claimed the only break of the match to win the first set and, after saving a set point in the 10th game of the second set, controlled the tie-break to seal the win.
