Zverev volleying his way to the big time

Zverev volleying his way to the big time

When the U.S. Open began, the idea that a German man named Zverev would be in the last 16 would barely have raised an eyebrow.

But while Alexander, who has won five titles in 2017, went out in round two, it is his older brother Mischa who has been doing the family name proud.

At 30, Mischa Zverev has enjoyed a superb year, putting the gloss on a stunning rise up the rankings, from outside the top 1000 in 2015 to the verge of a place in the top 20.

M. ZVEREV/J. Isner 6-4, 6-3, 7-6
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. He seemed to have a lot of trouble passing you. What were you able to do to make it difficult for him?

MISCHA ZVEREV: Say again.

Q. He seemed to have a lot of trouble passing you. What were you able to do to make that tough for him?

MISCHA ZVEREV: I think approach well and try to cover the net very well and read where he's going to pass. I've played him a couple times this year already. I kind of know his pattern, so I try to read his positioning on the court, his footwork.
Yeah, I feel like if I get lucky in the beginning of a match, and I get a couple, like, tough passing shots, then he maybe starts feeling like the court becomes smaller, maybe he starts missing a few here or there. That's kind of my advantage.

Mischa Zverev US Open Interview Day 3

M. ZVEREV/B. Paire 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You seemed to have the first two sets in hand, then it got away. Take us through the match.

MISCHA ZVEREV: Yeah, it was a good start, but he's a very erratic player, I think, very emotional. Beginning of the third set I had a 15-40 game on his serve. He managed to win it and started pumping himself up a little bit. All of a sudden I think he hit, like, two or three return winners on my server the very next game and broke me. Held serve, won the third set.
Then I think I felt like I played pretty well in the fourth. Had plenty of chances to break him. Had match points. I was 3-Love up in the tiebreaker. I think got a little nervous, started thinking a little bit. All of a sudden I see myself in a fifth set, 5-All. Thank God he served two doubles on deuce. That was it.
