Federer to miss Olympic Games and rest of 2016 season

Federer to miss Olympic Games and rest of 2016 season

What a sad news we have to share with you today... Roger Federer has just announced on Facebook that he will not play the Olympic games and that he will miss the rest of the season.

Dear Fans,
I’m extremely disappointed to announce that I will not be able to represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Rio and that I will also miss the remainder of the season. Considering all options after consulting with my doctors and my team, I have made the very difficult decision to call an end to my 2016 season as I need more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year. The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover. It is tough to miss the rest of the year. However, the silver lining is that this experience has made me realize how lucky I have been throughout my career with very few injuries. The love I have for tennis, the competition, tournaments and of course you, the fans remains intact. I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017.
Thanks for your continued support.
Roger

Wishing Roger all the best from here! Get well soon Roger we want you back on the tour!

Nadal set for Toronto return before Olympics

Nadal set for Toronto return before Olympics

Rafael Nadal is on track to make the Olympics and plans to return from a wrist injury at the Toronto Masters at the end of July, days before the Games begin, his coach said Thursday.

"The plan is to play in Toronto because that's what suits us," Toni Nadal, who is also Nadal's uncle, told a press conference in Mallorca, adding the 14-time Grand Slam title winner could start training on court again in two weeks.

"It's following the normal recovery schedule and now he has to strengthen the wrist and the arm again," said Toni Nadal.

"(Nadal) will arrive in form in Rio. It will give him time to prepare."

Nadal, 30, will miss Wimbledon after failing to recover from the wrist injury which also forced his early withdrawal from the French Open last month.

He pulled out of the French Open, where he has been champion on nine occasions, after injuring a tendon in his left wrist after just two rounds.

Nadal, the world number five, is keen to play at the Rio Olympics after being unable to defend his gold medal at the 2012 London Games because of a knee injury.

He had been scheduled to be Spain's flag-bearer at the opening ceremony.

The Spanish federation announced earlier Thursday that Nadal and Garbine Muguruza will lead Spain's charge for Olympic tennis glory and could play together in the mixed doubles.

Murray destroyes Federer to win Olympic Gold

Andy Murray beat Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to win the men's singles gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

"It has been the best week of my tennis career by a mile," Murray said. "I've had a lot of tough losses. This is the best way to come back from the Wimbledon final. I'll never forget it."

Murray broke Federer's serve four times in a row to take complete control of the match.

"He never looked back," Federer said. "His credit for getting in the lead and using the crowd to come through. He did an unbelievable job."

Juan Martin del Potro won the bronze at the London Olympic with a 7-5 6-4 victory over Novak Djokovic.

Nole had several opportunities to break in the first set but he was not able to convert and at 5-5 Juan Martin was the one who broke to lead.

In the second set, the Argentine broke early and served to wrap up the win in an hour and 48 minutes.

"I know everybody in Argentina was following this match, trying to give me the power to play my best tennis. I really appreciated that. I think this gift is for all our country," said Delpo.

Mirnyi and Azarenka win mixed gold at London Olympics

Mirnyi and Azarenka win mixed gold at London Olympics

Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi beat Andy Murray and Laura Robson 2-6 6-3 10-8 to win the Olympic mixed doubles gold medal.

The British pair bounded into an early lead, taking the first set comfortably.

The Belarusians hit back to take the second, however, to set up a tense championship tiebreak.

Mirnyi and Azarenka moved 9-6 ahead and although the British pair saved two match points Azarenka's sharp volley claimed Belarus's first gold medal in Olympics tennis.

Azarenka was asked about trying to play through the home crowd's loud support for their opponents. "It wasn't easy, for sure, but it was expected - I mean, if we came on court in London and everybody was cheering for us, it would be kind of weird, right?" she said. "We just tried to focus and take our chances because they were playing absolutely amazing. We just tried to stay in it and fight as much as we could. Once we had our chance, we were really focused on that.

Federer edges Del Potro in epic semifinal at London Olympics

Roger Federer defeated Juan Martin del Potro 3-6, 7-6 (5), 19-17 to advance to the final of the Olpympic Games for the first time.

"It has been a long time coming," he said.

"I definitely got a sense that it was something special," Federer said. "The deeper we went into the match, the more I thought, 'Wow, this is so cool to be part of a match like this.'"

Federer converted only two of 13 break-point chances, the second coming in the next-to-last game, and had several nervous moments. But he held serve 12 times in the final set to stay in the match.

With the comeback victory, he is assured at least a silver. On Sunday he'll play in the final against Andy Murray, who beat Novak Djokovic 7-5, 7-5.

Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic 7-5, 7-5 to reach the final at the London 2012 Olympics Tennis Event.

Murray will next play Roger Federerin a repeat of this year’s final at The Championships 2012.

The first 11 games went on serve, Murray eventually earned a set point opportunity at 5-6 and then struck a forehand crosscourt pass to clinch the opener.

The Scot saved break points in the first, third and ninth and 11th games of the second set and at 5-6, Djokovic lost three straight points and Murray took his first opportunity to close the match.

“I had a lot of break balls in the second set,” said Djokovic. “Practically every service game, I had chance in the second set to make a break, especially the one at 5-all. It's a disappointing loss. But he deserves to be in the final.”

Federer sets up clash with Del Potro at Olympics semifinals

Roger Federer defeated John Isner 64 76 to advance to the semifinals of the London 2012 Tennis Olympic event.

Federer broke in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead. That was the only service break of the match.

Isner hit a 137 mph serve, and Federer lined a backhand return that caught the net and still landed a winner.

"You just feel bad, really - but relief, because it's finally over," Federer said.

"It goes against you sometimes; it goes for you sometimes," Isner said. "It's unfortunate, but I'm not going to dwell on it. He was better than me today."
