Raonic downs Sampras in tennis exhibition

Milos Raonic defeated Pete Sampras 7-6 (4), 6-1 in an exhibition match at Air Canada Centre.

Raonic used his booming serve to overpower Sampras, who was playing his first match in Canada since retiring almost a decade ago.

"This kid's serve is bigger than big," Sampras said.

While neither player was brimming with personality, the 5,707 fans in attendance were treated to some entertaining tennis. Sampras is still fit and showed he can hang around with one of the big guns on the ATP World Tour, even one who is half his age.

Pete Sampras believes Novak Djokovic can be No. 1

Pete Sampras believes Novak Djokovic can be No. 1

Pete Sampras was ver impressed by Novak Djokovic's performance at the 2011 Autralian Open and commented that he believes that Nole can be the No. 1 in the ATP rankings.

At the Australian Open, Djokovic defeated Roger Federer and Andy Murray for the title.

"Winning Slams is tough," said Sampras. "To win these Slams you've got to be special. Djokovic is now one of these special players. He's a great mover. He goes from defense to offense better than anyone, right up there with Nadal.

"He seemed very inspired in Australia and he’s an emotional player and when he’s in a good mood and the crowd is pulling for him, he’s a tough player to beat. I’ve felt he’s been temperamental, but when he puts it together he’s right there with Roger and Nadal.

"He started the year off by winning the Aussie and he’s going to be threat the rest of the year. He believes in himself more and he’s beaten Federer in last two majors and he could [reach No. 1]. Nadal has a lot of points to defend and I wouldn’t count out Roger, but Novak has arrived and the way he beat Roger and Murray in straight sets was pretty impressive."

Monfils beats Sampras at SAP Open exhibition

Monfils beats Sampras at SAP Open exhibition

Gael Monfils defeated Pete Sampras 7-6, 6-4 in an exhibition at the SAP Open.

Monfils got the best of Sampras during the entertaining match where he eve took a photographer’s camera to snap a shot of Sampras, he also did a push up, sprint and sit-up while Sampras rested after a long point and tried a few between-the-leg shots.

Sampras showed off his stellar serve-and-volley game and bantered with the crowd throughout the match.

He said after the match he is looking forward to his next exhibition against Andre Agassi in New York later this month.

“I played a little better than I did last year and held my own, but physically that’s the most I’ve served and volley in combination of the last seven years. Not easy." Said Sampras.

“Gael’s a great mover. He returns well and made me work pretty hard on my service game, but all in all, I’m very happy with the way I played. I had a few chances in the first set I let slip away, but he’s the real deal. I’ve played a lot of good movers in my day, but not only does he move well, but he slides, which helps really cover the court that much better,” he added.

About Monfils’ chances of winning a major, he said: “You look at Roger [Federer], [Rafael] Nadal and [Novak] Djokovic now, you can tell that they can play at that level a little bit easier, a little less effort, whereas with Gael I think just to get there is a lot of work.

"He has the talent, it’s just a matter of putting it all together, but he has the game. He serves big, he can come in when he has to, and returns quite well, but to win these majors you’ve got to be very, very special. He has the talent, it’s just going to take some time. He’s still very young. He’s 24. He still has a lot of time to get it.”

ITF offers Sampras replica for Davis Cup wins

ITF offers Sampras replica for Davis Cup wins

Pete Sampras´s tennis trophies were stolen a few weeks ago and the president of the ITF, Francesco Ricci Bitti, offered him a replica of the trophy from his two Davis Cup wins.

Sampras said most of his trophies and other memorabilia were stolen from a public storage facility in Los Angeles.

itti says “we were sorry to learn of the theft of so many of Pete Sampras’s trophies. Pete Sampras' Trophies and memorabilia stolen

Pete Sampras' Trophies and memorabilia stolen

Pete Sampras is not in his best moment right now as thieves have stolen the majority of his' trophies and memorabilia from a public storage facility in West Los Angeles 3 weeks ago.

The good part of this sad news is that the great tennis player still has 13 of his 14 grand slam trophies.
In this robery, sampras lost most of the hardware from winning 64 tour titles, two Davis Cups, an Olympic ring and six trophies for finishing world No. 1 in the year-end rankings from 1993-1998.

"My first Australian Open trophy is gone, and so is everything else," Sampras said.

"We've had some housing issues and we stored things while we were sorting that out," he added. "I was like, 'What?' I thought there were security cameras. I thought these things were locked up tight. I was shocked."

Sampras was most upsetting because he would have liked to have shown the trophies to his children.

"I'm not one to gloat about trophies, or show them off," Sampras said. "I've never been like that. I just want them for my kids to see. They didn't see me play, but I'd like them to see these things.

"Losing this stuff," he added, "is like having the history of my tennis life taken away."

The stolen items were not insured, Sampras said, because it was not possible to assess their value.

"For me to have it for my kids is priceless," he said. "I just hope it hasn't already been destroyed. That's why I wanted to get the word out now.

"I know this is a long shot, but I'd regret it if I didn't at least try. Maybe somebody knows something. That's all I can hope for."
