Melzer beats Raonic to win 2012 Memphis title

Jurgen Melzer won the 2012 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships title after defeating Milos Raonic of Canada 7-5, 7-6.

Melzer broke Raonic to go up 6-5 in the first set and then served out to win the first set, finishing with a 108 mph ace.

Raonic needed four break points before breaking Melzer go up 3-1 in the second set. The Canadian held serve for a 4-1 lead before Melzer broke back when Raonic double-faulted to give the Austrian the advantage and then hit a forehand into the net.

Still, Raonic had set point at 30-40 leading 5-4 when Melzer double-faulted but he was not able to take it.

Video: Roddick Dived on Match Point in Memphis - Hot Shot of the Day

Andy Roddick hit the best point of the week ( and maybe of the year) at the Memphis final against Milos Raonic.

The American lunged forward into a diving down-the-line forehand pass into the open court.

Roddick was left with with a grazed right forearm, but it was a small price to pay for the return. It was a dramatic end to a dramatic final, and most likely the best championship point the tournament has ever seen.

“That’s the best shot I’ve ever hit in my life, considering the circumstance,” said Roddick.

Andy Roddick wins Memphis Title by beating Raonic in 3 sets

Andy Roddick wins Memphis Title by beating Raonic in 3 sets

Andy Roddick scored a thrilling 7-6 6-7 7-5 win over Milos Raonic to win the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships title in Memphis.

This is Roddick's 30th title, he also has at least one title in 11 straight years.

“I think I was very fortunate. I feel like I got outplayed, I just stuck around and kept trying,” Roddick said. “What a memorable 30th victory for me. I couldn’t be happier to do it in Memphis.”

Raonic who won the title in San Jose last week will move to around No. 37 in the ATP rankings.

Roddick started slowly with a couple of double-faults and fought off a couple break points to hold serve. They reached the tie break where Roddick broke twice to go up 8-7 and served an ace to take the first set.

They broke each other’s serve early in the second set before holding serve into another tiebreaker. Raonic converted on his third set point after Roddick hit a backhand wide off his serve and then hit a forehand long.

In the third set, Roddick had a chance to close out the match early as he broke Raonic and held serve to go up 4-1. But the Canadian broke back to pull to 4-3. The American was up 5-4 with a chance to break Raonic at 30-40 only to put a backhand into the net. Facing deuce, Raonic served up his 150-mph ace and then hit a backhand crosscourt for the winner.

Raonic tied the final game at 30 when Roddick put a forehand into the net by doing the same. Roddick sealed the match by diving to put his racket on the ball for a winner down the line that broke Raonic for the victory.

“I think I may be on one of the YouTube most-viewed points,” Raonic said. “I was on the wrong end of the court. But at least I’ll be on the (description).”

Andy Roddick vs Milos Raonic in Memphis Final

Andy Roddick vs Milos Raonic in Memphis Final

Andy Roddick beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-4 to reach the final at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis.

Roddick will try to capture his 30th career ATP crown against Milos Raonic, who defeated Mardy Fish 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Del Potro was broken in the second game of the match as Roddick raced to a 3-0 lead. The Argentine broke Roddick at the start of the second set but was broken back back in the next game and Andy broke a second time later in the set to keep the lead and then sealed the match.

“This is probably the best match I’ve played this year including Australia. I played one bad game but besides that I was making his holds tough ones and I played pretty good defence, and attacked when I had to.

“I played pretty smart and mixed up some serve and volley and I didn’t let him get any rhythm, if he sets up for enough balls and gets some rhythm he can hit it probably harder than anybody. I was happy with the way I played today.”

"To play in the final of 50 tennis tournaments as a professional is a pretty big number," Roddick said. "Better than 50 finals would be 30 wins—I think that's what I have ahead of me. Certainly a pretty big number.

"Not sure how many guys have won 30 tournaments, so it certainly kind of rounds off the number. It sounds better than 29."

“Andy was really difficult to play today. He played really well, served really well and I think he played much better than me on the important moments especially on the break points.

“Of course I’m a little sad but I have the next tournament in two days and hopefully I can be in good shape like I was in San Jose and still win matches.”

The South American will rise to about 164th in Monday's ATP rankings after back-to-back semi-final runs and Roddick said he expects Del Potro to return to the top 10 this year.

"I hope so," Del Potro. "It's a long road. Andy will be top 10, I think, forever."

Roddick Beats Hewitt to Set up Semifinal Clash with Del Potro in Memphis

Roddick Beats Hewitt to Set up Semifinal Clash with Del Potro in Memphis

Andy Roddick defeated Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis.

Roddick will next face Juan Martin del Potro, who beat Michael Russell 6-4, 6-2.

“He was playing better early on,” Roddick said of Hewitt. “I haven’t gotten off to the best starts in two out of three of my matches. I’m going to have to start playing better from the get-go. But a match can turn quickly, and it did tonight in the third set. The end of the second set and the third set was probably the best I’ve played in this tournament so far.”

Roddick said he thought Hewitt was fighting through something Friday night. Asked if something was wrong with his foot or leg, but Hewitt said he was all right.

The American produced 21 aces but he opened the match with a double-fault. He double-faulted again as Hewitt broke him in the first game.
At 3-5 Roddick double-faulted once more to fall behind 0-30 but survived the game forcing Hewitt to seal the set with his serve.

In the second set, Roddick broke Hewitt in the fourth game and then kept the lead. He served out for the set without problems to send the match into the decider.

In the third set, Roddick broke Hewitt again. The Aussie fought off four match points in the ninth game and held his serve to pull to 5-4.

Roddick also had two more chances to close out the match before he finally converted on his third by serving up a 135 mph ace.

“He made quite a few unforced errors early on, though, and his serve percentage probably wasn’t as high as he would’ve liked. From then on, he served a lot better,” Hewitt said. “I couldn’t get up in his service games and put pressure on him from there. He’s one of the better closers out there with his serve when he’s up in a game.”

“I was just trying to make him serve out the match, and I was able to fight out of that game to my credit,” Hewitt said.

“He just keeps plugging away,” Roddick said of the Aussie. “He definitely makes you earn it if you want to get a win.”

Del Potro rneeded only 87 minutes to beat Russell, a qualifier who had been the only player not to face a break point this week.

Del Potro hadn’t been broken, either, but he quickly ended Russell’s streak.

Against Roddick, del Potro is unbeaten in three career meetings, all of which have come on hard courts.

“It’s going to be a very, very tough match for me,” del Potro said. “I will try to beat him. I've beaten him every time, but tomorrow will be a different match. I think it will be a very good match for the fans and hopefully I will win.

"I'm very glad to work through to the semis… I like this country a lot. I've won many tournaments. My best memories in my life are in this country. I want to thank the tournament director for giving me a wild card.”
