Cilic send Croatia into Davis Cup Final

Cilic send Croatia into Davis Cup Final

Croatia reached its second Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final after a fired-up Marin Cilic swept away Richard Gasquet 63 62 75 to give the competition’s 2005 winners an unassailable 3-1 lead over France

The victory capped an extraordinary weekend at Zadar's Kresimir Cosic Hall for 2014 US Open champion Cilic, who beat Lucas Pouille in Friday’s singles and led the charge in Saturday’s doubles success when he and Ivan Dodig beat the more heralded duo of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Croatia and France tied after day one of Davis Cup semis

Marin Cilic overpowered Lucas Pouille 61 76(4) 26 62 after Richard Gasquet had fired the French ahead with a 62 76(5) 61 whitewash of Borna Coric.

The two singles rubbers set the perfect scene for a fascinating doubles contest on Saturday, when Croatia’s Marin Draganja and Ivan Dodig take on Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

With Coric unable to hold off a fired-up Gasquet, Croatia’s pack leader Cilic faced a delicate task and looked the part as he got the better of the unpredictable Pouille, who made a name for himself when he beat none other than Rafael Nadal to reach the quarterfinals of this year’s Wimbledon.

Richard Gasquet Wimbledon Interview - First round

Richard Gasquet speaks to the media after his 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over Aljaz Bedene

Q. That match looked a lot closer than the scoreline suggested. A lot of breakpoints.
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, especially on grass court, if he is doing all these breakpoints, it can be another match. He had many in the second set.
As I said, it could be another the match. I think I played well. I saved all my breakpoints. I did mine all the time. Of course, it's a close match because he's playing very good from the baseline. He's a very dangerous player, has a good serve.
To win in three sets, it's a good match for me. I'm very happy with the way I played because I know he's a dangerous player.

Q. Are you hitting the ball a little bit harder than you used to?
RICHARD GASQUET: I try. I'm trying to. Of course, when I'm playing well, I'm doing it. Not every match, you know, but I think I am trying to serve better, trying to play more consistent, to go more to the net.
Sometimes it's working. But if I want to be in another level, I think I need to do it.

Q. A quick analysis of the match and why you think you won.
RICHARD GASQUET: I start bad. I was not feeling confident on the court. He was playing great.

I think the second set was really important for my confidence. I start to return better, serve much better than the start of the match. I did the third set. Then the fourth set, I saved many breakpoint. Then I did mine.

The difference, I finish 6-1. It was a great match for me and a big victory.

Gasquet took home €80,000 and 250 ATP Rankings points.

"I am really happy with the victory," said Gasquet. "Yesterday it went three sets and today I was more confident and started better. To feel no pain it's a good thing for me.

"I needed to play a good clay-court match, to make him run. He's a very good player, very powerful with a big forehand and big serve."

Gasquet needed a mere 65 minutes to earn the victory, grabbing a break of serve in the sixth game of the first set and streaking to a double-break lead to open the second. He fired four aces, won an impressive 94 per cent of first serve points (30/32) and saved all three break points faced.

Richard Gasquet Interview Australian Open R2 Wednesday, 21 January, 2015

Q. You played James Duckworth at Wimbledon a few months ago. It went up to 5 sets. Was today a bit easier than you thought it might be?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I thought I start better than in Wimbledon. It made the difference because I could break him very fast. It was important for my confidence. I think I play very well. You never know what could happen in a serve, but I kept my serve. And I'm really happy to win in three sets because this is very dangerous player. He has a big serve. He's talented going to the net. I think he would be a good player. For me it's a great result to win him in three set because I played in Wimbledon I did five. He can play well.

Q. It was hot out there today. Think you were the only person without any head gear on. Does the heat bother you at all?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it was hot on the court, but the Aussie fan was nice with me, so it was a great atmosphere on the court. So even if it was hot, the court is great. So it was a lot of fun to play today on the court.
