Richard Gasquet Wimbledon Interview - First round

Richard Gasquet speaks to the media after his 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over Aljaz Bedene

Q. That match looked a lot closer than the scoreline suggested. A lot of breakpoints.
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, especially on grass court, if he is doing all these breakpoints, it can be another match. He had many in the second set.
As I said, it could be another the match. I think I played well. I saved all my breakpoints. I did mine all the time. Of course, it's a close match because he's playing very good from the baseline. He's a very dangerous player, has a good serve.
To win in three sets, it's a good match for me. I'm very happy with the way I played because I know he's a dangerous player.

Q. Are you hitting the ball a little bit harder than you used to?
RICHARD GASQUET: I try. I'm trying to. Of course, when I'm playing well, I'm doing it. Not every match, you know, but I think I am trying to serve better, trying to play more consistent, to go more to the net.
Sometimes it's working. But if I want to be in another level, I think I need to do it.

Q. A quick analysis of the match and why you think you won.
RICHARD GASQUET: I start bad. I was not feeling confident on the court. He was playing great.

I think the second set was really important for my confidence. I start to return better, serve much better than the start of the match. I did the third set. Then the fourth set, I saved many breakpoint. Then I did mine.

The difference, I finish 6-1. It was a great match for me and a big victory.

Richard Gasquet Interview Australian Open R2 Wednesday, 21 January, 2015

Q. You played James Duckworth at Wimbledon a few months ago. It went up to 5 sets. Was today a bit easier than you thought it might be?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I thought I start better than in Wimbledon. It made the difference because I could break him very fast. It was important for my confidence. I think I play very well. You never know what could happen in a serve, but I kept my serve. And I'm really happy to win in three sets because this is very dangerous player. He has a big serve. He's talented going to the net. I think he would be a good player. For me it's a great result to win him in three set because I played in Wimbledon I did five. He can play well.

Q. It was hot out there today. Think you were the only person without any head gear on. Does the heat bother you at all?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it was hot on the court, but the Aussie fan was nice with me, so it was a great atmosphere on the court. So even if it was hot, the court is great. So it was a lot of fun to play today on the court.

Gasquet out of Monte Carlo Masters

Gasquet out of Monte Carlo Masters

Richard Gasquet withdrew from the Monte Carlo Masters 2014 after failing to shake off a back injury.

Gasquet hoped to take part in the tournament after returning to training this week.

"I only picked up the racket again on Tuesday, very steadily. But I've been in pain since yesterday and today, after 20 minutes of training, I couldn't carry on," Gasquet said on Saturday. "I could hardly even carry my bag. I thought things would be fine after 15 days without doing anything. But no, not at all."

His absence means Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, initially facing Ernest Gulbis in the first round, moves up to ninth seed and has a bye into the second round.

I have been elevating my game match after match and I am extremely proud in the way I played today. I really enjoy playing here in Montpellier. I love the atmosphere there is in this arena."

He claimed €77,315 in prize money and 250 Ranking points.

"It was great to be in final here once again," said Gasquet. "I am extremely disappointed to have lost in the final, but that’s tennis. I need to congratulate Gael because he’s played unbelievable all week. I wasn’t able to read his serve, he was serving bullets all match. My only way out was to try to push him to a tie-break and wait for him to start making mistakes. But it didn’t happen."
