Raonic defends SAP Open title

Milos Raonic defeated Denis Istomin 7-6 (3), 6-2 to win the SAP Open title in San Jose.

Raonic ripped only seven aces in the final but took control of points from the start, turning the tournament into a serving exhibition in the climate-controlled conditions of an indoor arena. He has dropped only two service games in two years in San Jose.

“I feel amazing. It’s definitely a different feeling from the first time last year. I think I’m more aware and more appreciative of the moment,” Raonic said.

Raonic return to San Jose final

Milos Raonic beat Ryan Harrison 7-6 6-2 to advance to the final of the 2012 SAP Open in San Jose .

Raonic fired 20 aces to set up a clash with Denis Istomin in Sunday’s final after the Uzbek upset Julien Benneteau 6-3 6-7 6-3.

“I think I did a really good job taking care of the serve,” Raonic said. “What I was doing really well was making most of my first serves. But when I missed a few, I was still playing pretty well on the second serves.”

Raonic into semis in San Jose 2012

Milos Raonic scored a 7-5, 7-6(3) win over Kevin Anderson to advance to the semifinals at the SAP Open, where he is the defending champion.

"Obviously, my job was to take care of my serve. That's the most important thing," said Raonic."If you fall behind, it's easy for him to close out the set. It's a straining match, but at the same time you just have to be patient."

Raonic won the first meeting between the pair in one hour and 42 minutes.

"I've really tried to treat it as much as I can like another tournament," continued Raonic. "Obviously, coming somewhere where you are defending, there are a few more media obligations. But outside of that, you don't really notice any difference from any other event unless you want to make it that way. I've tried to clear my mind about it and treated every match as if it's another match."

Roddick ousted from SAP Open by Istomin

Andy Roddick lost to Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the SAP Open.

The American had a very bad night in so many ways, he dropped every point in his first service game and never regained his rhythm in a maddening match that took only 76 minutes.

“It would be abnormal if you weren’t frustrated,” said Roddick. “The question is, `How do you figure your way through it?”’

Already slowed by injuries, Roddick struggled to cover the court against an opponent that found every angle.

Roddick advances in San Jose 2012

Andy Roddick beat Denis Kudla 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-4 in his second round match at the 2012 San Jose.

Roddick saved 12 of 13 break points faced to advance in two hours and 42 minutes.

While leading 5-4 in the second set, Andy ran to his right along the baseline and crumbled to the floor rolling his ankle. He returned with it heavily strapped, only to face three break points in the 11th game of the set.
However, he recovered to win the next five points and eventually took the second set in the tie-break.

“I thought that was it,” opponent Denis Kudla said. “The look on his face looked like it hurt a lot.”.

In the third set, Roddick came back from 2-0 down for a victory even he’s not quite sure how he earned.

Monfils pulls out of San Jose with injury

Gael Monfils withdrew from the San Jose Open with a right knee injury.

Monfils pulled out after playing a doubles match on Tuesday. He didn't played singles as he had a bye in the opening round.

The Frenchman started to feel pain in his knee during his last tournament where he reached the final in Montpellier. He said the pain returned this week in San Jose where he also played in an exhibition match on Monday.

Monfils is expected to return to France to get a magnetic resonance imaging scan on the knee.

He will also miss next week's Regions Morgan Keegan Championship tennis tournament.

Blake Strode will replace him in San Jose. Strode will face qualifier Dimitar Kutrovsky in the second round Thursday.

Andy Roddick SAP Open Press Conference - February 2nd 2012

Andy Roddick SAP Open Press Conference - February 2nd 2012

GREG SHARKO: Good afternoon and thanks for joining in for today's call with three‑time SAP Open champion Andy Roddick, who joins us from Austin, Texas. Andy won titles in 2004, 2005 and 2008 and was runner‑up in 2010. Andy will be making his 10th appearance in the Bay Area and he has a 32‑6 career record at the SAP Open.
Last season Andy earned his 30th career title on the ATP World Tour in Memphis and extended his title streak to 11 consecutive years, joining Roger Federer as the only active player to accomplish that feat.

Following San Jose, Andy will participate in Memphis where he is also a three‑time champion and he'll be playing there for the 12th straight year.
Before we open it up for questions, I'd like to introduce the SAP Open tournament director Bill Rapp.

BILL RAPP: Andy, thanks for joining us today. We're looking forward to having you back in San Jose. I know you're looking forward for your fourth title here. Can you talk about some of your best memories here in San Jose.

Milos Raonic wins SAP Open After Beating Verdasco

Milos Raonic wins SAP Open After Beating Verdasco

Milos Raonic defeated Fernando Verdasco 7-6 7-6 to win the SAP Open, his first ATP Tour title.

Raonic came through in his first career final, becoming the youngest winner on tour since Marin Cilic won in New Haven in 2008 at age 19.

Raonic fought off four set points in the first-set tiebreaker and then took advantage of the only minibreak in the second-set tiebreaker to win the match. The ending was controversial as Verdasco hit a service return into the net as a fan yelled out.

Verdasco complained but to no avail despite his complaints to the chair umpire that he was distracted.

“What I hope is that there are not people like that in the stadium,” Verdasco said. “If they don’t know the rules in tennis they can go see soccer.”

“I can’t stop smiling,” he said. “I’m happy about it and I hope I can keep it going more than six weeks, for a full year schedule, and see where I am at the end of the year.”

In a scheduling quirk, he will have to do it against Verdasco, who gets a shot at a rematch in the first round in Memphis on Wednesday.

“I will just pray a lot that he will hit a lot of double faults and I won’t even have to play,” Verdasco said.

Verdasco lost just seven points in 12 service games, but it was the four dropped points on his serve in the two tiebreakers that was the difference.

“When it gets close, it comes down to who gets it that day and it comes down to a few points,” Raonic said “I sort of used up my luck today and got out of that first set. In the second set, I was a bit more confident by then and it came out the way I wanted to.”

Raonic was given a Sharks jersey, along with the winners check for $92,000.

“It’s nice to know a hockey arena isn’t new to me,” Raonic said. “I’ve been in a few of these. This feels like home.”
