Nole to miss Serbia Open 2012

Nole to miss Serbia Open 2012

Novak Djokovic has announced on his website that he will not be a part of the Serbia Open in Belgrade from April 30 to May 6.

His next tennis tournament will be the Madrid Masters.

“After consulting with my family, I’ve made a decision not to take part in the tournament this year. I will take some time, try restore my emotional energy. This is certainly one of the toughest decisions in my career, but it is impossible for me to play in the next few days and to think about tennis, when there are some other things in my head,” Djokovic explained.

Novak Djokovic wins Serbia Open title

Novak Djokovic defeated Feliciano Lopez 7-6, 6-2 to win the Serbia Open title.

In the opening set at 2-2 Lopez had two but was unable to convert any of them.

The Spaniard had another chance to break in the first set at 4-4 before Djokovic comfortably won the tiebreaker.

“Last night I dreamed of being the hero of the year by beating you here but once again, you showed that you are a truly great player,” Lopez said to Djokovic.

At 1-1 in the second set, Djokovic saved a break point at 3-2 and then won 3 games in a row to seal the win.

“You people make it worth it to come back to this city and play and hope for the victories,” said Djokovic.

“I wish to thank my family and my staff for supporting me all these years and also the fans who make this event that much more enjoyable for me to take part in,” he said.

“I am really glad that Feliciano had such a great tournament after accepting my invitation to come here.

“We are making a huge effort every year to bring the top players to Belgrade and it’s not easy because it takes place only a week ahead of the Madrid Masters.

“Hopefully, we will be able to make it an ATP 500 event very soon and I am looking forward to returning next year.”

Djokovic vs Lopez in Serbia Open final

Djokovic vs Lopez in Serbia Open final

Novak Djokovic reached the Serbia Open final after Janko Tipsarevic pulled out with a thigh injury.

Djokovic will play against Feliciano Lopez, who beat Filippo Volandri 7-6 6-2.

Tipsarevic said he sustained the injury during his win over Somdev Devvarman. He will also miss next week’s Madrid Open Masters.

“Tipsarevic was forced to withdraw from the tournament with a right leg injury and the world number 36 will also skip the Madrid Masters next week,” the Serbia Open organisers said.

Writing on his Facebook page, Djokovic said, "Bad news. Janko had to pull out from tonight's semi final match, because of muscle injury. I sincerely hope he will manage to recover for the rest of the clay court season. Final is tomorrow at 16h. I will try to get the tittle back where it belongs, and that is SERBIA ! :-)"

Lopez and Volandri broke each other twice in the first set and made it to the tiebreaker that went to the Spaniard.

Feliciano broke twice in the second set and won on his second match point when Volandri returned a serve long.

“I’ve played well the whole week,” Lopez said. “Novak has not lost a match this year, tomorrow will be interesting.”

Djokovic into Serbia Open Semis

Djokovic into Serbia Open Semis

Novak Djokovic beat Blaz Kavcic 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the Serbia Open semifinals.

The world number 2 was up 4-1 in the second set when he almost quit because he said the lines became too slippery once it started raining.

“I don’t want to play, I don’t want to get injured,” Djokovic shouted at the chair umpire, leaving the court and taking a seat.

Play resumed only after the lines were wiped, and Kavcic then managed his only break.

In the semifinals, Nole will play Janko Tipsarevic, who defeated Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

“I remember very well losing to Kavcic 10 years ago in an under-14 tournament, I haven’t forgotten the result either and I had a score to settle here today,” Djokovic said.

“We grew up together and I really wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

“Pressure is part of the game, especially in front of your own fans but it’s also a very special feeling to be here and I am looking forward to playing against Janko.

“The most important thing is that Serbia will have one player in the final and may the best player win what should be a very entertaining match,” he said.
