Del Potro Loses in Tennis Comeback

Del Potro Loses in Tennis Comeback

Juan Martin del Potro lost 7-6 6-4 to Olivier Rochus in the opening round of the Thailand Open.

Delpo looked rusty and sluggish in a match where Rochus always looked in control.

This was the Argentine's first tennis match since January. Even he never got into the match and made too many unforced errors it was a good match for him.

In other first-round matches, Rainer Schuettler beat Ricardo Mello 6-4 6-2 and Jarkko Nieminen defeated Danai Udomchoke 6-3 6-2.

Seeded players with byes into the second round of the $551,000 event in Bangkok are world number one Rafa Nadal and fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, Austrian Juergen Melzer and Latvian Ernests Gulbis.

Gilles Simon beats Troicki to win Thailand Open title

Gilles Simon defeated Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-3 to win the Thailand Open title, his first ATP title of the year.

“I expected a very hard time on the court, and I had some (difficulty). It’s never easy to win a tournament,” said Gilles Simon.

Troicki and Simon traded breaks late in the first set before the Frenchman broke when leading 6-5. Simon broke an error-prone Troicki to make it 4-2 in the second set. Simon won on his second match point when the Serbian hit a forehand return wide.

“I’m a little disappointed I didn’t win today,” said Troicki. “But Gilles played a great match, and congratulations to him.”

Thailand Open: Giless Simon books place in Final

Gilles Simon scored a 6-4 7-6 win over Juergen Melzer and made it into the final of the Thailand Open.

Simon coped well with Melzer’s powerful, topspin-loaded returns and he played mostly from the baseline. The Frenchman edged ahead late in the first set and dominated the tiebreak in the second as Melzer blasted his returns into the net and beyond the line.

“He was tough and there’s not a lot of difference between us,” said Simon. “I’m finding it’s easy to play well when I’m rested. I missed several big events and just to rest for two to three weeks has really helped my game.”

In the final Gilles Simon will play against Viktor Troicki, who defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 16 62 63.
