Nieminen advances to 2nd round of Thailand Open

Jarkko Nieminen battle past Dominic Thiem 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Thailand Open 2011.

Nieminen was two points away from losing in the 10th game of the deciding set against Thiem. But he held his serve and then earned the decisive break, despite having struggled with an illness for the last three days.

"It was difficult because I was lying in bed ill most of the past three days. I’m feeling better and better all the time and I felt in many stages I was playing well. This young guy is very talented. I don’t want to take anything from him, he played a great match.” Said Nieminen.

Matthias Bachinge also advanced after beating Greg Jones 7-5, 6-4, and Michael Berrer downed Marco Chiudinelli 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Garcia-Lopez wins Thailand Open Title

Garcia-Lopez wins Thailand Open Title

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win the Thailand Open title today.

Garcia-Lopez applied steely nerves and outserved and outwitted Nieminen in three close sets. He clinched the title on his fourth match point and dropped to kiss the court.

“It was an unbelievable week for me,” Garcia-Lopez said. “I feel unbelievable. I cannot express (it). Maybe my face doesn’t tell, but inside I’m really happy.”

The first set went back-and-forth on serve until Garcia-Lopez broke in the 7th game for a 4-3 lead and then held. Nieminen also held serve, but Garcia-Lopez served out the set with an ace.

Nieminen fought back in the second set, winning the first three games and repeatedly whipping strong serves and forehand winners down the line.

“I came back but he lifted his game in the third set,” Nieminen said. “I tried everything but it wasn’t good enough.”

Garcia-Lopez took a 3-1 lead in the third set and then lost his rhythm. He got even at 4-4 and then held serve to move ahead.

He finished the championship with a forehand winner on his fourth match point.

Nadal upset by Garcia-Lopez in Thailand Open semis

Nadal upset by Garcia-Lopez in Thailand Open semis

Rafael Nadal lost 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the semifinals of the 2010 Thailand Open.

“It’s a difficult loss to accept,” Nadal said. “It’s one of those matches you are going to lose once every two years.”

Garcia-Lopez delivered a string of winners and flat, wide serves that included 10 aces in a performance that astounded him.

“Everything was fantastic,” he said. “For the moment, I’m a bit shocked.”

Signs of trouble emerged in the second set when Garcia-Lopez started dictating important shots. At one stage, he whipped a shot deep to the Spaniard’s backhand and forced him to throw his racket in an unsuccessful attempt to reach the ball.

“He played a great match, especially in the third,” Nadal said. “I had a great chance to be in the final. I have to blame myself that I didn’t play aggressive when I had a chance to break. He served well on break points. I lost chance after chance.”

Garcia-Lopez rode his momentum through the third set, applying pressure and forcing errors by Nadal.

“I’ve never beaten a No. 1 player in the world,” Garcia-Lopez said. “I think this is the best victory in my career.”

Garcia-Lopez will play the final against Jarkko Nieminen, who beat Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-2.

Rafael Nadal into Thailand Open quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal defeated Ruben Bemelmans 6-1, 6-4 to reach the PTT Thailand Open quarter-finals.

Nadal dropped just eight points on serve and converted three of five break point opportunities.

"It's never easy in a first match," said Nadal. "I had a few days rest after the US Open but I think I am playing well. I'm happy with my match. Bemelmans played well during some moments and the second set for sure was not easy. It's important to start with a win."

Nadal, who met Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva after the match, said, "It was an honour for me to meet the Prime Minister and I would just like to thank him for coming to watch the match."

Nadal will next meet Mikhail Kukushkin, who scored a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Olivier Rochus.

Verdasco loses at Thailand Open

Verdasco loses at Thailand Open

Fernando Verdasco was upset 6-4, 6-4 by Benjamin Becker in the second round of the Thailand Open.

Verdasco was sluggish from the start of the match and quickly fell behind 4-0. He tried to comeback, but ended it up losing the set 6-4.

The Spaniard dropped the ninth game of the second set on a double fault, and Becker served well to set up match point at 40-30, closing it out with an impressive volley.

"It's always good to get a win over a Top 10 player," said Becker. "It's not every week that it happens, so it gives me confidence for the rest of the indoor season. I had beaten him before so I knew I had a chance today."

Viktor Troicki also failed to advance to the quarterfinals with a 7- 6-2 loss to Jarkko Nieminen.

Fernando Verdasco took part in Muay Thai alongside 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medalist Somjit Jongjorhor in Bangkok.

Verdasco was also joined on the stage by Paradorn Srichaphan.

“I would love to learn more Thai boxing,” said Verdasco. “I’ve always loved martial arts so maybe when I stop playing tennis I can learn some more. It was a lot of fun to learn some of the moves today.”
