Legg Mason Tennis Classic now called Citi Open

Legg Mason Tennis Classic now called Citi Open

The Legg Mason Tennis Classic is changing its name to the Citi Open.

Classified by the ATP as a 500-level event, it's one of the top 20 tournaments on the men's professional tennis circuit.

In addition to a new title sponsor, the 2012 tournament will include a lower-level WTA event played at the same time and place: July 28-Aug. 5 in Rock Creek Park.

Mardy Fish said that he will enter the Citi Open after missing the tournament in 2011 because of a heel injury.

"I love the city, I love the weather. The court surface is great for me." He said.

Stepanek wins Washington 2011 title

Stepanek wins Washington title

Radek Stepanek upset Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4 to win the ATP Washington Classic 2011 title.

Stepanek, who lost five of seven prior matches to Monfils, dominated the final without problems.

Stepanek broke Monfils in the third game of the match and led 3-2, 30-love when rain halted play. A break lasted three points, enough for Stepanek to hold to 4-2 before another downpour hit.

When play resumed, each man held twice, Stepanek taking the set on a service winner after 54 minutes.

Stepanek broke Monfils again to open the second set, the Frenchman racing down the Czech's forehand volley but netting a forehand.

Stepanek made the break stand, serving out to claim the victory after 93 minutes with a forehand volley winner as thunder rumbled in the distance.

Monfils vs Stepanek in Washington tennis final

Monfils vs Stepanek in Washington tennis final

Gael Monfils edged John Isner 6-4, 3-6 7-5 to reach the final at the 2011 ATP Washington Classic.

Isner and Monfils staged a classic despite a rain delay at the start and two interruptions that pushed the end to 1:15 in the morning, when Isner netted a forehand after a Monfils lob winner.

"I'm very happy," Monfils said. "It's not finished, but almost a great achievement. I have had a tough year. I had an injury and a new coach. To come up strong again, it feels good."

Monfils will play against Radek Stepanek, who ousted Donald Young 6-3, 6-3.

"It will be a tough match," Monfils said. "He will be aggressive. I will have to be strong from the start because it won't be easy."

Stepanek has dropped five of seven meetings with Monfils, including their most recent clash two weeks ago on Hamburg clay.

"He's moving incredibly well," Stepanek said. "He's a great shotmaker."

Isner denied Monfils on two match points in the 10th game of the third set.

"It's frustrating because on match point, the machine goes down," Monfils said. "That's the first time that has happened to me."

In the tie-breaker, neither player took a point off the other's serve until the decider. Isner blasted a 127-mph ace to reach his lone match point at 6-5, but Monfils answered with a 110-mph ace, setting up the drama-ending shots.

"The 6-all point he hit a huge second serve, put it on the line and lobbed me," Isner said. "It was a risky shot and then I cracked on match point."

Rain dogged Monfils and Isner, delaying their start, returning after they had played only seven points and striking again after Isner held to lead 5-2 in the second set, sending Monfils to talk with new coach Patrick Chamagne.

"I had the feel of his game and his serve," Monfils said. "I discussed with my coach and released all the frustration I had."

Monfils took the only break of the first set to lead 5-4 when Isner smacked a forehand wide and the Frenchman held serve with a 109-mph ace to win the set.

But Monfils netted a forehand drop volley in the second game of the second set and Isner rode the break to claim the set, the only disruption coming during a pause after a 107-mph Isner serve hit a spectator in the face.

"This tournament can give me a kick for the rest of the season," Stepanek said. "If I can make it to the US Open and be seeded, that would be great for me."

Young beats Baghdatis to reach Washington semifinal

Young beats Baghdatis to reach Washington semifinal

Donald Young defeated Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 7-6 to advance to the semifinal at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washing where he will meet Radek Stepanek, who eliminated Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-4.

“He’s very talented, but it’s a tough world out there,” 2006 Australian Open finalist Baghdatis said. “You have to keep on working. You have to stay with your feet on the ground and keep on working hard and fighting.”

Young played aggressively Friday, looking for openings to rush to the net, where he won the point on 12 of 18 trips.

He won 10 consecutive points early in the first set to grab a 4-1 lead. Baghdatis lacked his usual verve—perhaps a result of being forced to play a pair of three-set matches Thursday—and put only 38 percent of his first serves in play.

“It’s not an excuse, but yeah, for sure, playing six sets yesterday was a tough day. I wasn’t 100 percent ready today,” said Baghdatis, the runner-up in Washington last year. “He played smart. He knew that I was a bit tired. … My hands were a bit tight. I couldn’t just hit the ball the way I was hitting it yesterday.”

Young closed the opening set strongly, serving it out with the help of his only two aces, including one that caught a line on the last point.

Baghdatis picked up his game considerably at the beginning of the second set. He won the first eight points, capped by an inside-out forehand winner that broke Young at love, en route to a 3-0 advantage.

Young, though, got back into the set, shortly after slapping a forehand into the net and admonishing himself by yelling, “Hit it!” Two points later, he broke Baghdatis by smacking a forehand winner down the line, then pumped his fists.

That was part of a four-game run by Young to go ahead 4-3, before Baghdatis broke back for 4-all.

Ahead 6-5, Baghdatis held three set points on Young’s serve—and thought that might have been a turning point.

“You never know. He’s a young kid. Maybe mentally he would give up a bit, just put his head down,” Baghdatis said. “But he didn’t give up.”

Indeed, Young saved all three of those set points. And in the tiebreaker, he won the final three.

Stepanek upsets Verdasco in Washington

Stepanek upsets Verdasco in Washington

Radek Stepanek defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinal at the ATP tennis tournament in Washington.

Stepanek will play against Donald Young, who beat Marcos Baghdatis 63 76.

Stepanek broke Verdasco in the fifth game and never faced a break point, taking the first set on back to back service winners.

He denied Verdasco on 7-of-8 break points in the second set to win after one hour and 51 minutes.

“Every match is different, so I was trying to forget about it and concentrate on [today’s] match," said Stepanek when asked about his last 3 matches against Verdasco that he lost.

“I wanted to be aggressive from the first point on. In the key moments, I was aggressive and it paid off. I’m very happy with the way I played and now I can forget about the match at Wimbledon.”

Troicki and Verdasco advance in Washington

Troicki and Verdasco advance in Washington

Viktor Troicki beat Ryan Harrison 7-5, 6-2 and Fernando Verdasco defeated Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 6-4 to advanc to the third round of the ATP Washington Classic.

Six second-round matches were pushed to Thursday by rain, including Monfils vs Sweeting and Somdev Devvarman vs Marcos Baghdatis.

Verdasco will next face Nikolay Davydenko, who beat Matthew Ebden 6-3, 7-5.

Davydenko lammented his inconsistency against lesser players during this last month.

"Now I'm losing to wildcards, qualies and 100-something players. I feel like I can't find my game like before," he said. "Maybe confidence. With some luck I'll win some tournaments and my confidence will come back."

"I need to prove a lot. Mentally I'm still down," Daydenko said. "I feel I can play. I don't want to retire."

Radek Stepanek made it past Wayne Odesnik and it looks like he is getting back to a good form.

Michael Russell eliminated Xavier Malisse 7-6 (7/4), 2-3 when the Belgian retired with a sore right arm and Donald Young ousted Jurgen Melzer 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 3-1 when the Austrian retired.

During a rain delay, Melzer said he would not resume play due to a pulled muscle in his left leg.

"You would like to win the last point but I felt like I put him in that position," Young said. "If he felt he could have won he would have come back."

Young will face Russell in the next round.

Washington 2011: Blake upsets Nalbandian

James Blake beat David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-4 in second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.

Next for Blake will be John Isner, who defeated Tobias Kamke 6-1, 6-3.

Blake and Isner live near each other in Florida, and hit together all the time. They’ll also team up in doubles in Washington.

“We’re practically neighbors. Last time I was home, I was eating breakfast at his house just about every morning. And he’s taken so much food out of my fridge,he owes me a few thousand dollars,” Blake said. “We practice together so often that I’ve seen his serve a million times—and it doesn’t get any easier.”

So what do you do?

“Sometimes,” Blake explained, “you’ve got to just guess.”

Isner needed only six aces to get past Kamke.

Blake´s victory over the Nalbandian allowed the American to get to the third round for only the second time in 10 tournaments this season.

He dominated Nalbandian for most of their match, saving all three break points he faced and winning 31 of 39 points on his first serve.

“This is the best I’ve served in two years, probably,” Blake said.
