David Nalbandian beat Marcos Baghdatis 6-2 7-6 to win the Legg Mason Tennis Classic at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington.

Nalbandian broke Baghdatis in the first game of the match at love and dominated the opening set like he did in the semifinal against Cilic.
The Argentine broke again in the seventh game before closing out the set.

The former world number 3 had break point at the start of the second set but was not able to convert. Baghdatis then took the lead when he broke his opponent who double faulted twice in that game.

Nalbandian immediately broke back, held and broke again to lead 3-2.
Baghdatis took advantage of Nalbandian´s unforced errors to level at 3-3.

He earned a set point in the 12th game but was denied Nalbandian saved it.

They reached the tie break where Nalbandian claimed a 5-0 lead. Baghdatis won the next three points, but the Argentine sealed the victory on his second match point.

“I felt I played good all week,” said Nalbandian. “I’d been practising well but I didn’t expect to win my first tournament back.”

Baghdatis failed to win the big points and that cost him the match as he converted only two of his 11 break-point opportunities.

“I knew that I would have chances on his serve,” Baghdatis said. “I had my chances to win the second set but I didn’t take them.”

“I felt in the second set I had to mix it up a bit and maybe go for a bit more,” Baghdatis said. “I did it pretty good. If I was serving a bit better today, if I could have won more easy points, I could have won.”

Nalbandian admitted he would not have bet on himself to win his first tournament back.

“It’s been about a year and a half fighting with the surgery, with the recovery,” said david. “We are so happy and this victory made me feel very good again.”

Currently ranked No. 117, Nalbandian is projected to rise back into the Top 50 at around No. 45.

"It’s really important because we were working very hard," said the Argentine. "It has been a year and a half fighting with the surgery and the recovery; we are so happy and this victory made me feel very good again...not only with the rankings, with my game, with everything. It was a good win."

David Nalbandian upset Marin Cilic 62 62 to reach the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic where he will face Marcos Baghdatis, a 62 76 winner over Xavier Malisse.

Nalbandian was broken in the opening first game but broke right back. Dominating form the baseline the Argentine won seven in a row to take the lead.

David was all over the court, getting everything back and forcing Cilic to make the mistake. Cilic was not serving good, he made many double-faultes, one of them to gave Nalbandian a match point.

“I can count on my hand how many returns he missed today,” said Cilic. “He was not giving me any openings.”

“I’ve been playing well all week,” Nalbandian said. “When I’m playing this good, it’s tough for everybody. It doesn’t matter who is on the other side.”

Nalbandian missed nine months, starting in May 2009, because of hip surgery and then has been sidelined since April because of a left hamstring injury.

“You never know, because not many players can come back from that injury,” he said about the hip.

"When you spend a lot of time outside the court you miss the tennis, miss the adrenaline. I'm trying to enjoy it every time I go out. I think I have another three or four years of playing at this level. I'm working hard to be fit."

Nalbandian is back on top form, playing amazing tennis and he will be someone to watch at the U.S. Open.

“He’s going to be a really tough player to beat in these next couple weeks,” Cilic said.

About the final and playing against Marcos Baghdatis, Nalbadian commented: “He’s a good player. We know each other. We have a pretty similar game from the baseline. I have to keep believing in my game."

Marcos Baghdatis defeated Xavier Malisse 6-2 7-6 to reach the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.

Baghdatis turned his ankle in the eighth game of the second set and Malisse showed great sportmanship by helping Baghdatis giving him a plastic bag filled with ice.

Baghdatis said it was “a bit of a strain, but I hope it will be fine for tomorrow.”

The Cypriot got the best of Malisse on the baseline exchanges but always kept his concentration.

Baghdatis fell out of the top 100 after a series of injuries, including to his back and wrist. He was back up to 25th this week and will keep climbing thanks to his showing in Washington.

“I worked on my fitness. I had to improve my physical condition, stay out of injuries, and that’s … why I worked very hard,” Baghdatis said. “I’m fit now, I’m healthy, and that’s the most important thing.”

In the opening set, Malisse was broken in the third game, he had a break chance in the fourth game but was not able to convert it. Baghdatis broke him once more for a 4-1 lead and then held twice to claim the set.

While trailing 4-3 in the second set Baghdatis turned his ankle when he tried to change directions along the baseline to go after a ball that wound up landing out.

He took an injury timeout to get the ankle taped.

When they returned to the action, Marcos was tested by a long rally exchange but was able to support it and held serve to level at 4-4. Both players held for 5-5 and then exchanged breaks to set up the tie-breaker which Baghdatis won.

“It looked fine at the end and I was moving pretty good. Hopefully I won't have pain tonight and it will be fine tomorrow,” Baghdatis said of his ankle. “Right now I am going to enjoy my victory. I’m very happy I won and it was a great fight.”

In the final Marcos Baghdatis will play against the winner of the match between David Nalbandian and Marin Cilic.

David Nalbandian reaches Washington Semis

David Nalbandian defeated Gilles Simon 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reached the semifinal in washington, his first ATP semi-final in 18 months.

Nalbandian will next face Marin Cilic, who beat Janko Tipsarevic 7-6 6-4.

"I feel good," Nalbandian said. "I will just try to keep believing in my game and play the best I can."

"During practice I know I can go far," he said. "Without playing matches, it's tough to know how far you can go."

Simon broke Nalbandian's opening serve and took a 3-0 lead. He closed out the first set routinely, and broke Nalbandian in the first game of the second set.

But Nalbandian eventually broke straight back as part of a four-game run that broke open the second set.

In the decider, both players exchanged breaks. Nalbandian broke again on the sixth game. He was broken back right but was able to break once more for a 5-3 lead when Simon netted a forehand and then held for the victory.

"In the second set, I started hitting better balls and he went down a little bit," Nalbandian said. "I trid to push it and play more offensive and it worked out."
