Rafael Nadal quickly adapted to the new surroundings at Roland Garros with a 6-2 6-1 6-3 demolition of Yannick Hanfmann in the first round of the French Open.

On a revamped Court Philippe Chatrier, the 11-times champion wasted little time in despatching Hanfmann after the German had the audacity to say in the run up to the match that he could do 'some damage'.

Nadal will next meet another qualifier, German Yannick Maden.

Nadal begins quest for 12th Roland Garros title

Rafael Nadal begins his French Open campaign on Monday, seeking his 12th title and 18th Grand Slam while looking to dismiss any doubts about his form after three consecutive semi-final exits in the run-up to Roland Garros.

Three different players ousted the Spaniard in clay court tournaments in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid before he roared back to his best to beat world number one Novak Djokovic in the final in Rome.

Nadal, a known stickler for routine and order, arrives at a revamped court Philippe Chatrier which has been 80% rebuilt for this year's tournament, but the 32-year-old said he will not be affected by the changes.

Fognini wins Swiss Open 2017 title

Fabio Fognini defeated Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 7-5 to win the Swiss Open 2017 title, his fifth career title.

Forgnini was always in control, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set and never allowing a break-point chance in the second.

"It's always a good feeling when you win," said Fognini. "Our job is winning matches and of course I'm happy with this. It was a really tough week for me. I remember my first match was really difficult. I couldn't play. I lost the first set 6-1 in 20 minutes, but in the end I won the match. I said to my team that if I continue playing like that, I'll go home. That's the sport. Every day I was feeling better and now I'm here with the title."

"Yes, for sure," Fognini said, when asked if the title is any sweeter as a new father. "This is the first title as a father, so it's something different and special."

The 31st-ranked Fognini is now 5-8 in finals on the ATP tour. He earned a prize of 86,000 euros ($101,000), and Hanfmann got a career-best 45,000-euro check ($53,000) for his full week's work.

"Fabio was the better man today, he deserves to win," said Hanfmann. "I had an amazing week here in Gstaad, the crowd was great. I come from college tennis and I'm used to great crowds, but the atmosphere here was unbelievable."
