Dominic Thiem, Roberto Bautista Agut and Kei Nishikori all came through their first-round matches at the Gerry Weber Open on Monday.

The third-seeded Thiem hit 19 aces as he defeated Russian qualifier Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (5), 6-2 for a second-round meeting with Yuichi Sugita. The 52nd-ranked Japanese player defeated German wild card Maximilian Marterer 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Fognini powers Italy to Davis Cup World Group quarterfinals

Fabio Fognini powered Italy through to the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup World Group, beating Japan's Yuichi Sugita 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6), 7-5 in the first reverse singles on Sunday.

Italy went into Sunday's play leading 2-1 after a doubles win on Saturday and Fognini's five-set victory in his opening singles match on Friday.

Fognini trailed 4-1 in the final set as Sugita sought to take the tie to a fifth match but the Italian rallied to secure the win.

Japan face Italian job in Davis Cup

Japan will be without Kei Nishikori when they host Italy this week for a place in the Davis Cup quarter-finals.

Japan's challenge in Morioka will be spearheaded by Yuichi Sugita, who won his first ATP tour singles title in Turkey last summer.

Italy have named Fabio Fognini and Paolo Lorenzi with Andreas Seppi, Thomas Fabbiano and Simone Bolelli also among Corrado Barazzutti's team.

Jack Sock's Australian Open preparation suffered a setback when he was injured at the Hopman Cup in Perth, resulting in a surprise call-up for Australian veteran Pat Cash as a substitute.

On a chaotic day, Sock retired early in the second set of his men's singles clash with Yuichi Sugita, having injured his hip during his loss in the first set tie-breaker at the mixed teams tournament.

Earlier, Japan's Naomi Osaka had withdrawn from her singles match with CoCo Vandeweghe due to illness.

Japan take control of world playoff v Brazil

Japan took a stranglehold of their Davis Cup world group playoff with Brazil on Friday as Yuichi Sugita and Go Soeda won the opening day's singles, albeit in contrasting fashion.

Sugita beat Guilherme Clezar 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 with quiet efficiency in Osaka before Soeda almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a nail-biting 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 win over Thiago Monteiro.

Soeda had played his way back into the second rubber with the use of clever angles and lobs before a sudden meltdown in the fourth set opened the door for his opponent.

Sugita 'not done yet' after first Wimbledon win

Yuichi Sugita followed up his first ATP Tour title win last weekend by recording his maiden victory at Wimbledon on Tuesday and the Japanese is now eyeing a place in the third round on the "sacred turf" of the All England Club.

Sugita beat Brydan Klein 7-6 6-3 6-0 in the first round at the year's third grand slam.

Sugita will feel confident of advancing further at SW19 as he is due to meet Mannarino in the next round on Thursday.

Yuichi Sugita wins Antalya Open title

Yuichi Sugita beat Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 7-6 to win his first ATP World Tour title at the Antalya Open 2017 tennis tournament.

Sugita needed one hour and 29 minutes to fight past Mannarino in Antalya final.

He takes home €78,270 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Rankings points.
