Federer and Nadal candidates for US Open title?

Federer and Nadal candidates for US Open title?

Who would have thought a year ago that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal would be candidates to win the trophy at the US Open 2017?

But they are, today more than ever with Novak Djokovic out of the fight due to his elbow injury and Andy Murray not going through his best moment.

If today we had to bet definitely would do for a final Federer vs Nadal if the draw puts them on opposite sides.

Andy Murray has stepped up his rehabilitation from a problematic hip injury, boosting his chances of being fit for the US Open next month.

Murray has begun his road to recovery following issues with his troublesome hip which flared up before Wimbledon.

He posted a video on Instagram of him hitting against a wall. It comes three days after Murray shared an image with his physio, Shane Annun at a swimming pool in less than flattering attire. He joked: "Not amused at the ridiculous outfit my physio had me wearing for pool rehab session today. At least I looked better than him in it".

Andy Murray gives journalist short shrift by issuing stern 'first male player' correction

Andy Murray gives journalist short shrift by issuing stern 'first male player' correction

Andy Murray has won widespread praise for correcting a journalist who claimed that Sam Querrey had become the first "first US player to reach a major semi-final since 2009".

In his press conference immediately following his injury-hit quarter-final defeat to Querrey, outgoing Wimbledon champion Murray interrupted the question to remind the reporter that his opponent was merely the first "male player" to have done so.

"I beg you pardon?" the journalist replied, before Murray repeated his succinct lesson on recent tennis history. Since 2009, Serena Williams alone has won twelve Grand Slam tournaments.

Andy Murray reached a 10th successive Wimbledon quarter-final after scoring a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 6-4 win over Benoit Paire.

Murray will face Sam Querrey, who he leads 7-1 in career meetings, for a place in the semi-finals.

"I thought I played well. Maybe a couple of sloppy service games in the first set but that was by far the best I'd hit the ball so far in the tournament. So I'm really pleased with that," said Murray.

- Murray handles prickly Paire -

World number one Andy Murray will be roared on every step of the way in week two at Wimbledon. The British star survived a scare to get there, against Fabio Fognini, his third straight unorthodox opponent. And the defending champion rates his next opponent, the unseeded Frenchman Benoit Paire. "He has a different game to a lot of the guys now. He has very good hands, moves well, takes a lot of chances, goes for his shots. He can be quite up and down," said Murray. Paire thinks he can cause an upset, after knocking out Jerzy Janowicz. "It's something different to play Murray in Wimbledon," he said. "To play Murray on Centre Court will be a good experience. I think I can do something good against him."
