Monaco and Robredo reach Copa Telmex final

Juan Monaco rallied to defeat defending champion David Nalbandian 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) Saturday in the semifinals of the Copa Telmex.

Monaco, the 2007 champion, made fewer errors in the second set and took a 3-0 lead in the all-Argentine match. Nalbandian broke twice to take a 5-4 lead but could not finish it off.

"I had my opportunities to close out the match in the second set. But the truth is Monaco played a good match and deserved to win. I hope he can win the title," said Nalbandian.

In the final, Monaco will face Tommy Robredo, who beat Jose Acasuso 6-4, 7-6 (3). Acasuso, who received a warning for ball abuse, led 4-1 in the first set but Robredo rallied to win five straight games.

"It was quite windy out there. It is tricky to play with the wind like this. Easy shots become really difficult and vice-versa." said Robredo.

Jose Acasuso
Acasuso and Monaco win in Buenos Aires

Jose Acasuso defeated Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3 while Juan Monaco beat Martin Vassallo Arguello, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the second round the Copa Telmex.

It’s the sixth time Acasuso has reached at least the quarterfinals in the clay event at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.

Chucho broke Fognini twice and saved the only two break points he faced, including one when he was serving for the match. The result kept up Acasuso’s strong play this month. He was runner-up in Chile and a semifinalist in Brazil.

Juan Monaco, the 2007 champion, will face Maximo Gonzalez, who in the first round upset two-time champion Carlos Moya, and today defeated Brian Dabul 6-3, 6-1.

Monaco complained afterward that the match should have been played at all in the 40-degree (104-degree F) heat. The players constantly toweled themselves off and both let difficult shots fall to the wayside to conserve energy during a match which last 2 hours, 14 minutes.

"It's difficult to play good tennis in such heat," Monaco said. "It's unhealthy and organizers should think more of the players' health. Luckily there are not many tournaments played in such high temperatures."

Nalbandian to meet Ferrero in Buenos Aires quarters

David Nalbandian
Nalbandian to meet Ferrero in Buenos Aires quarters

David Nalbandian scored a7-5, 6-2 victory over Daniel Gimeno-Traver to set up a quarterfinal clash with Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Copa Telmex in Buenos Aires.

Seeking to become the first back-to-back champion at this event, Nalbandian delighted the home crowd in dismissing his opponent in 84 minutes of play.

Nalbandian broke Gimeno-Traver’s serve four times en route to victory.

A former No. 1 now ranked 93rd, Ferrero upset Marcel Granollers, 6-7 (7-9), 6-0, 6-3.

Ferrero has not won a singles title since 2003 and is 3-3 against Nalbandian.

“I didn’t serve very well,” Nalbandian said. “I have to try and be more consistent with my game,” especially against a worthy opponent like Ferrero, he added.

“We’ve known each other for a long time. He’s the former world No. 1, a great player and it won’t be easy to beat him.”

No player has ever defended his title at this $600,000 red clay event, first held in 2001. Nalbandian, however, appears to have a comfortable path to the championship match.

The Argentine does not have to face a player ranked in the top 65 until the finals, where a showdown with Tommy Robredo is possible.

Robredo secured a spot in the quarters on the opposite side of the draw when defeated Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-2 3-6 6-4.

Tommy is looking to claim his second trophy in as many tournaments after winning his eighth title in Costa do Sauipe last weekend.

Robredo will play against Franco Ferreiro, who reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Pablo Cuevas.

Moya and Gaudio bow out in Buenos Aires

Carlos Moya, lost to qualifier Maximo Gonzalez 6-4, 6-4. While gaston Gaudio was defeated by Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2 4-6 6-2.

Gonzalez led 4-0 Moya in the first set and almost blew a 5-1 lead in the second.

"Without a doubt, it's the most important win of my career," Gonzalez said.

Moya, Champion in 2003 and 2006, blamed his loss on pains in his leg he's been suffering for more than a year.

"I haven't competed in a month. Now the priority is to put myself in good physical condition." Moya said.

Gaudio, winner in 2005, had a better excuse. He lost a 3 set battle to Daniel Gimeno-Traver in his first match on tour in a year because of injuries.
It's been 21 months since the Argentine won a match on the tour and he made a fighting start with breaks in each set, spoiled by 11 double faults.

In other results from Tuesday Tommy Robredo defeated Potito Starace 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, but Thomaz Bellucci was beaten by Marcel Granollers 7-5, 7-5.

Monaco wins, Almagro falls in Buenos Aires

Juan Monaco defeated Sergio Roitman 6-0 6-0 in the first round of the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Buenos Aires.

Despite recording a first serve percentage of 33%, Monaco was unbroken in the encounter and took advantage of six of the 10 break points he created on Roitman’s serve to secure victory in just 58 minutes, having dropped only nine points on serve throughout.
It was the first double bagel to occur on the ATP World Tour since David Ferrer defeated Paul Goldstein 6-0, 6-0 in the Barcelona first round in April 2007.

Monaco will meet Martin Vassallo Arguello, who upset Albert Montanes 6-2 6-3, in the second round.

Nicolas Almagro suffered a first round exit, after losing to Oscar Hernandez 6-2 1-6 6-3.
Almagro looked to be back on track after dropping the first set as he broke twice in the second set to level the match.
However, Hernandez rallied to break serve once more in the final set and close out the victory after one hour and 52 minutes.

Hernandez will play against Diego Junqueira, who defeated Nicolas Massu 3-6 6-4 6-4 in the next round.
