Gulbis wins Open 13 title

Gulbis wins Open 13 title

Ernests Gulbis beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (5), 6-4 to win the Open 13 title on Sunday.

Gulbis beat France's two best players in straight sets on his way to the title, having eliminated the top-seeded Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.

"It's a really nice record for me. Five-nil is really good. I remember when I used to play Futures and Challengers, I think I lost maybe one or two finals," Gulbis said. "When I get into finals I really have good form and good confidence and play my best tennis."

"My long-term goal in tennis isn't to be Top 20. It's to be No. 1," Gulbis said. "Anything less than that wouldn't make me fully satisfied. I don't want to get to 30 years old, look back on my career and say I didn't make something of it. Everybody's looking for satisfaction in life."

Del Potro wins 2012 Open 13 title

Del Potro wins 2012 Open 13 title

Juan Martin del Potro beat Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4 to win the Open 13 title.

Things went on serve in the opening set as Llodra was strong on serve but del Potro broke him in the ninth game and held serve easily to win the first set.

Del Potro broke Llodra in the fifth game of the second set and then took a 4-2 lead.

When serving for the match the Argentine fell behind 0-30—and faced pressure on his second serve but a strong second serve pinned Llodra behind the baseline and del Potro whipped a backhand inside the line to get back to 15-30. He then served an ace for 30-30.

Del Potro advances, Fish crashes out of Open 13

Albano Olivetti stunned Mardy Fish 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round of the Open 13.

Fish rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second set to level the match. But Olivetti jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the decider and kept his composure to earn the biggest victory of his young career.

“That’s just a number next to his name right now,” Fish said of Olivetti’s ranking. “He won’t be there for very long if he continues to play like that.

“The first time that I’ve ever seen him hit was when we warmed up for the match. Sometimes that happens and you have to adjust. His style of play is hard to adjust to.”

Soderling beats Cilic To Win Open 13 Title

Soderling beats Cilic To Win Open 13 Title

Robin Soderling defeated Marin Cilic 6-7 6-3 6-3 to win the Open 13 title.

“It’s just an amazing feeling,” Soderling said. “I won nine (titles) in my career and three of them are won in one-and-a-half months, so it’s unbelievable.”

Cilic broke Soderling in the opening game of the match and held serve with an ace to lead 2-0. The Swede broke back in the eighth game and saved four set points in the tiebreaker, but Cilic converted the fifth to take the lead.

“I’m a little bit disappointed,” Cilic said. “I was there on top of him after that first set. I was playing really well.”

In the second set, Soderling slammed his racket against the ground after netting a forehand return in the third game, but he regained his composure to produce to break for a 2-1 lead.

Cilic got the break back and leveled at 3-3. The Croat dropped serve in the next game as Soderling went up 4-3. And the Swede then had no problems to claim the set.

“In that seventh game, the match a little bit changed to (his advantage),” Cilic said. “I had chances there. After that, he started to play better and I lost myself a little bit in the game. It was tough to come back.”

In the final set, Soderling broke in the sixth game to lead 4-2. He held serve with a service winner to go 5-2 up.

Soderling slammed an ace to set up three match points, and he converted the first with a forehand winner down the line.

“I really have good memories from this tournament,” said Soderling, who lost the Open 13 final in 2004. “I love to play here. Now, finally I have the title, it feels unbelievable.”

“I have to be very pleased with the performance during the week,” Cilic said. “It’s a start for me. I hope it’s not a finish. Big tournaments are coming now. So I think this was a great preparation for me.”

Soderling vs Cilic in Open 13 Final

Soderling vs Cilic in Open 13 Final

Robin Soderling made it past Dmitry Tursunov 7-5 6-1 to set up an Open 13 final encounter with Marin Cilic, who beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, in Marseille.

From 5-5 in the first set, the Swede reeled off seven straight games before closing the win.

“The first set was close; I wasn’t maybe aggressive enough in the beginning,” said Soderling. “But then in the second set I was a little bit more aggressive, started to play my own game, and then it was much better. Overall I think it was a good match."

Soderling is enjoying an eight-match winning streak and is bidding to win three titles in a season for the first time in his career.

“It’s not too bad!” joked Soderling. “I won many matches and I beat a lot of good players. It feels really good and hopefully it can continue this way for a while.”

“It’s true that my start to the year has been quite incredible,” Soderling said.

“Today I perhaps lacked a bit of aggression in the first set. I’ve already played a final here in 2004 when I lost to Dominik Hrbaty but generally I have such good memories of France. I always play really well here.”

Cilic beats Youzhny to reach Open 13 final

Marin Cilic defeated Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 to reach the final of the Open 13.

He will play against the winner of the match between Robin Soderling and Dmitry Tursunov.

Cilic broke the Russian in the opening game, then he double-faulted at 3-2 to hand Youzhny a chance to break back, but Cilic managed to hold serve.

In the seventh game, Cilic got two break chances and converted the second for a 5-2 lead.He sealed the set with his serve.

Youzhny fought back in the second set by mixing up his shots and changing speeds. He won five straight games to level at one set apiece with a service winner as Cilic dropped serve twice.

The Russian broke Cilic in the fifth game of the decider. He then fired two aces, and hit a backhand volley and a smash to hold serve and lead 4-2.

Cilic double-faulted at 5-3 to face a match point, but saved it with an ace.

Cilic rallied at 5-5 when Youzhny sent a backhand into the net and then clinched victory when a forehand from Youzhny sailed long.

“It’s for me a big relief to come back against this kind of player and also to back it up with yesterday’s win,” said Cilic. “It shows that I was waiting for this moment for a while and I’m satisfied with (my) on-court mentality. I was there fighting for my chance even though I wasn’t playing great.”

“It was really amazing that I came back and that I had a chance to win,” Cilic said. “From the beginning of the second set until 4-2 in the third, he was playing extremely well. He was almost making two aces per game. He was making me work a lot.”

Soderling and Cilic reach Open 13 semis

Robin Soderling beat Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-4 Fto reach the semifinals of the Open 13.

Soderling saved four breakpoints in the opening service game and then broke Llodra twice in the first set and once again in the second.

“I was a little bit slow again today, but he played really well and really fast. I was lucky to hold my serve in the first game,” Soderling said. “But I think the fact he played so fast and so well, it was good for me. It was like a wake-up call. Every time I play against Mika the match can go either way because we both serve good.”

Soderling will face next the winner of the match between Jurgen Melzer and Dmitry Tursunov.

Marin Cilic upset Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-4 to also advance.

“I’m really, really happy with my game,” Cilic said. “I played really consistently from the beginning until the end.”

Cilic next plays Mikhail Youzhny or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The Croat produced 18 winners in the first set and broke his opponent twice while never facing a single breakpoint himself.

“I was very close to the baseline and making him move as well,” Cilic said. “In that first set I made him play a lot, especially on his serve … I was really into the game and found the ways to put him in tough positions.”

Berdych had to wait until the ninth game of the second set before getting ahead on Cilic’s serve at 15-30. Cilic then saved the only breakpoint he faced in the match at 30-40 with a looping forehand to the top of the court.

Cilic sealed the match with a superb forehand pass down the line after a long rally.
