Australian Open 2010: Rafael Nadal wins in straight sets

Rafael Nadal beat Peter Luczak 7-6 6-1 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Australia Open where he is the defending champion.

In the next round Nadal will play against the winner from the match between Leonardo Mayer and Lukas Lacko.

Nadal came back from a break down in the first set before wrapping up the tiebreaker to love and breezing through the last two sets in just over an hour.

“I never thought it was going to be an easy match before going on court,” Nadal said.
“I was playing shorter than usual. I made more mistakes … After (the tiebreaker) I started to play longer, I started to play more aggressive, so I started to play more my tennis.”

Luczak had the Spaniard on the back foot early, engaging him in lengthy baseline rallies and attacking his serve. The strategy paid off as Luczak broke Nadal´s serve to lead 5-3, slapping a sharp cross-court return that clipped the line on the game’s sixth break point. But nerves came in and double-faulted twice when serving for the set allowing Nadal to break back, then promptly collapsed in the tiebreaker.

After committing 10 unforced errors in the first set, Nadal made just six more for the remainder of the match. He also produced 47 winners.

Nadal resumed normal service in the second set, breaking twice to race to a 5-0 lead and never looked back to claim the wim without much difficulties.

The Spanbiard said he was feeling confident, but said last year’s victory was far from his mind.

“No, I am thinking about try to play good tournament. Sure, when I walk around and I see my picture there, being on the floor, so I will always have nice memories.”

Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Michael Russell 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-2 in the first round of the Australian Open.

Next for Del Potro will be the winner of the match between James Blake and Arnaud Clement.

During the match Juan Martin hit 49 winners and 21 aces while Russell committed 54 unforced errors to his opponent’s 61 errors.

“I don’t feel hundred percent, but I feel better than yesterday, and I hope (I will) be better for Wednesday, in my next match,” Del Potro said. “After two hours the pain came and I feel (it) a little bit, but I can play. Of course, if I (am) here, I want to win matches.”

Del Potro had some trouble in the third set when he lost his composure due to some contentious line calls and was arguing with chair umpire Mariana Alves.

But then the Argentina that won the US Open in 2009 got himself together to finish off the win.

About the little fight he had with the umpire Del Potro commented:
“She said I take too much time to call the challenge, and I tried to explain to her ‘I just hit the ball and then see the mark and call the challenge’. But she said ‘you can’t do that’. That’s it. After that, I was disappointed, but (it) is the rules."
