Ernests Gulbis advanced to the BNP Paribas Masters third round after Mikhail Youzhny retired midway through the second set due to a back injury.
Gulbis was leading 6-4, 3-0 when the Russian announced he was not able to continue.
He will next play against the winner of the match between Andy Roddick and Jarkko Nieminen.
Youzhny’s hopes of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals are now over.
He was in 10th place in the ATP Finals race and needed to reach the final in Paris to have a chance to qualify.
Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer, Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco and Jurgen Melze are still fighting for the last 3 places.
Juan Monaco beatSam Querrey 7-6 6-2 in 86 minutes to advance to the second round in Paris while David Nalbandian beat Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-1 and will next face third seed Andy Murray.
"It's (the court) very fast, but I think I have a good first round," admitted Nalbandian. "[I] got in some trouble at the end of the first set, but then I played good. So [I'm] quite happy with this first round."
