Gael Monfils suffered a 7-6 3-6 6-4 loss to Marcel Granollers in the Valencia Open 500 quarter-finals.
With this loss Monfils needs to win next week's ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Paris to qualify to the ATP Finals in London.
Granollers led Monfils 4-1 in the first set but the Frencman got back into the match after winning four straight games.
The spaniard saved three set points in the tie-break, before closing out the the set on his fifth set point opportunity.
Monfils broke his opponent in the sixth game of the second set to send the match into the decider.
In the third set, Granollers broke early and served for the match at 5-3, but was broken back. Granollers bounced back immediately with another break to seal the win.
Granollers will next play Juan Martin del Potro, who beat Sam Querrey 6-2, 7-5 in 78 minutes.
